Ok let's hear it.
What are the thoughts on how this car will compare vs the GT3 of all varients .
I will it be better than certain models?
Will people ditch GT3's for one?
Will it ever live up to the gt3 without a motorsport lump?
Will it keep value as gt3's have?

Presumably you are comparing for track days in which case it is simply personal preference, if comparing for the road then it's down to whether you want two seats or four, if looking at depreciation then I would think a 911 will always hold value better.

The GT3 doesn't have rear seats...

4 seats in s GT3? Actually the comparison is as an all round vehicle ideally .

GT4 and 991GT3 have the same engine dont they, 9A1. Its just detuned for the 4.

Thats not my understanding Molly gt4 engine straight from the carrera s whereas the 991 gt3 is build at the motorsport plant.

Happy to be corrected

not that fussed about engines specs.

it's all about the drive, it will either drive well or it will feel to modern, long geared and still have annoying electric steering.
although it's said to feel better than a 991 GT3, and it should go round corners better than any past GT3.
only way to get a GT3 round a corner was to fit rear steer !!! :-p

time will tell I guess with 1st drives in the UK in July.

Yes, this is correct. GT4 is a standard C2S engine whereas the GT3 has a dry sump engine built by the motorsport team with a lot of unique internals.. crank, pistons etc.

I dont think this is correct. ALL engines are built at Zuffenhausen are they not including the cup car. I thought Weissach was now pure R&D and they have not actually built a car since the 996.1 GT3. Both the GT3 and GT4 were developed by the Motorsport department and they are both derived from the 991 carrera S engine with the GT3 having more 'motorsport' components. Has the cup car now switched from using the old Mezger too?

I tend to agree on the engines being from Zuffenhausen.

Whilst the boggo Carrera S engined GT4 will undoubtedly be a reasonable package at the money, and likely to command a premium for some time more due to limited supply rather than outright ability, it could never be seen as a cut price GT3 despite having some GT3 front suspension bits to help it go round corners. biggrin:

Be interesting to see whether future incarnations of the GT4 go down the 'turbine' route having regard to APs recent sworn statement hehe that all GT cars for the forseeable future will remain NA. Question is, is it a Porsche GT, irrespective of the badging? Definitely not when compared to the GT3.

The way they've packaged and positioned the GT4 - its very much Porsche motorsport's "baby" GT model. This is in no way to undermine it, it is simply the first iteration of the highest tune of Porshce's mid-engine sports car. It doesn't have the same racing heritage (yet) but all the signs are Porsche are serious about supporting the GT4 race series.

Not necessarily 'better' just different I'd say.

I'm tempted by the mid-engined layout and i've owned 2 GT3's which is a vote in favour surely.

However the absense of the motorsport lump and historic market appreciation of the GT3 means its unlikely to challenge the GT3's status anytime soon.

I'd certainly expect values of the GT4 to remain solid while demand outstrips supply. If they produce more than 2,000 per year globally, values might soften a little but it's very hard to predict even then.

My 10 cents....

not the 918 then ;-)
And lets not forget Porsche were winning races in the mid engines cars :-)

If it had shorter gearing, could well have been a real tempter. For me, that kills it.

Brackett, and we were getting on so well !.

Not writing it off, but stepping into one from a GT3 just doesn't interest me. Would you like my slot ?.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the physical size difference. Prefer Cayman size for fun on twisty roads.

Don’t get all the comments about the long gearing. Drive it and then decide.

I never drove a car and thought ‘that doesn’t sound like a motorsport derived engine’ either. What does it matter?

Can you define better?

Compared to say a 997.1 GT3, the GT4 has more modern components. Be it audio/vidual, updated interior, suspension configuration, damping, new technology materials all over. Porsce don't stand still, so you will see evolution here.

Is it faster? It will do roughly the same time around a track as a 997.1 GT3 I think, the GT3 may be slightly quicker in a straight line, the GT4 faster when cornering. GT4 comes on Cup 2's right? It wont be as quick as a 997 3.8 gen 2 RS.

Desirability comes into this I feel, the GT3 is proven and has more heritage (within motorsport, in the press etc) and has always received praise. I remember visiting OPCs in the mid 2000s and all the salesmen were just in awe of the GT3, that's the car they wanted to talk about. The GT4 is new, and it will take time for it to build a following. It could be the best car in the world to drive, but its desirability may not reflect this. When the original Cayman came out, the press were all praising it, best drivers car etc etc... did they fly off the shelves? No. I was in the market for a Porsche in 2007, was set on buying a 911. One test drive in a Cayman S had me converted, bought one straight after. They are great cars to drive, but they are not a 911, and fickle as it may be that unfortunately matters for residuals and desirability!

981 Cayman same width including mirrors as 991 GT3 at 1978mm.

Rather bizarre comments about the motorsport derived engine, What does it matter?? Err...quite a lot. Its not what it sounds like (although the synthetic GT4 piped induction appears too farty).....its what it goes like. And that's the main huge huge difference.....l

Hmm.. well I thought the same until I came across this

The gt4 looks for all intents and purposes the same size as the gt3 and the 991 gt3 gives the impression of being a bloody big car.

To be fair the 991 GT3 doesn't have a motorsport derived engine either, but i knows you like that one.
