I recently started a topic for buying a Porsche at auction,I thank all for the advice from the great and knowledgeable and concede to all that this is not a good way to purchase this type of car, I am therefore at the mercy of dealers and private sellers. That is all well and good but am finding it hard to spot the private sellers as there does not seem to be that many although all the dealers are spouting how they source all there perfect cars privately, surely wouldn't the private sellers advertise these cars first before taking a massive rse rmming from the dealers or am I just looking in the wrong places ????
I bought my 997.2 privately through an eBay classified advert! It had the balance of the OPC extended warranty and as it is PDK I wasn't worried about over-revs. I did test-drive cars at a couple of indies and almost pulled the trigger at my OPC (but the mileage was higher than I wanted).
I did read your auction thread but can't remember your budget. I think at a certain price point owners prefer to part-exchange to save the perceived private sale hassle, and this is what those dealers who buy privately use to persuade owners to sell - time is money. No one likes throwing away money or being shafted, but are the savings really worth the time? Only the seller can really answer. Another reason why I believe so few are sold privately is the fear that a potential buyer won't believe you have a genuine reason to sell or that they will want a PPI which may take up your time.
Incidentally, I did respond to another private ad but it was also leggy on miles and I wasn't bothered about silver. The seller happened to be a well-known former racing car manufacturer. I was really tempted to waste his time and go and see the car just to look at some of his other stuff, but though better of it and declined...

I advertised my 981S last year privately and it was bought very quickly by a dealer. He traveled 200 miles by train within hours and we shook hands and he drove off. He sold it on very quickly and made a very tidy profit, fair enough, I should have done my homework.
In my experience, the dealers call first and haggle hard.
It took a couple of days before the private buyers started calling, but of course, it was too late.
Great cars are sold privately but you have to be quick and ready.

Funny I pulled the trigger on a new CGTS & OPC said they took six deposits that day! Any major reason why C4S over a C2S? Might just open up the cars you could consider. Although not a major concern a C4S will add several kilos to the weight of the car over a C2S. I'am sure you have looked at the main indies (Dove House, JZM, RSJ etc). Dove House where I have just bought my 2nd Porsche from them (997 Gen 2 C2S PDK) will also source a car for you. They will do all the leg work & don't think you are committed at all. if you change your mind they will happily sell the car as stock anyway. They have a rather nice 997 Gen 2 C4S in White with satin wheels in stock at the moment. Defo one I would have considered.
My house has a long steep drive and I couldn't get my merc out for three years on a trot when a flake of snow came down, I sold that on and bought a Volvo xc70 which did the job but was absolutely Horrid and made my girlfriend heave after long journeys,I like the idea of the added traction and hope to use the car all through the year!I like the 997 c4s tip and they are good value against a pdk which have a little way to dip yet But am open if the opportunity arises with the pdk.
I'm not sure how effective the 4S will be on an icy drive - hopefully someone with experience will comment.
Mine is997.2 which has a different 4S system. I can light up all 4 wheels on gravel or grass. It's really effective for starting off quickly in a straight line on a wet road - a stability aid. Mine will easily step out if I make a quick right turn at a junction, requiring opposite-lock until the front picks up. I'm just pointing out these features because I hate you to go 4S and still not be able to get up the drive!

Its on my tick list now so I will try hard to get one with 4wd,I wont drive it like I stole it,I'm keen on keeping my license clean and I don't want my girlfriend to think Im a Dck.Mine is997.2 which has a different 4S system. When I sold my 997.2 I had quite a few phone calls and more email enquiries , I answered them all including photos of the tyres and discs even the stitching on the dash.In my experience, the dealers call first and haggle hard.

I had a few appointments to view , one guy so desperate to buy it he couldn't travel 2 hours to come and have a look.
The first dealer who rang asked the right questions , agreed a price subject to the car being as stated , he booked his flight and was at my house at 9.15 the next morning , quick coffee , money transferred and away.
Then the phone calls started , I was going to buy it this weekend and more of a similar nature , if you want to buy a decent car , move quick , the dealer did.
I find too many fanny around asking loads of questions and demanding photographs by email , go and have a look it's the only way.
Good advice, have managed to beat the dealers numerous times but struggling to find the car anywhere !

Ummm. see your point. I live in the country & have used all my Porsche's all year round. My new arrival - 997 Gen C2S - I shall defo get a set of winter wheels/tyres. But if bad snow/ice I can borrow the wifeys 4 x 4 panzer. Last winter I was driving a BMW coupe with winter wheels/tyres & was really impressed how it coped.
Good luck with the search. Think you might like the C4S at Dovehouse. Have seen this one in the flesh. Shame it came in after I had just bought mine
The planets have aligned,have just laid down a d on a rather special 23000m 1 lady owner c4s tip coupe,Just tying up some details with it ie collection etc, I can get some sleep now as Ive been glued to the pute for weeks on the search for right spec car,Thanks to all the advice on this forum and hope to bump into some owners out there with the same passion....
