out of interest, what you consider to be the maximum mileage you would look to have on a 964 or 993, when buying ?

I dont think there is a limit.

Mileage is one indicator only. There isnt a mileage that would stop me buying a good condition car at the right price.

Obviously, higher mileage cars are cheaper, so its all relative.

The PS one at 24k with 161k on it might be a good buy? It depends on its condition.

It's going back a few years (probably about 15!) but my 964 had about 120k miles on it when I bought it with a very recent top end rebuild. I sold it 9 years later to a colleague with about 185k miles on it I think.

Look at it this way.

I looked at four different 993s before I bought mine.

The lowest had 64K miles on it, the highest was 148K and a Varioram. I ended up buying one with 110K miles under its belt.

Reason why? Well for a start I'd always previously owned low mileage Porsche, and as prices started to rise I was sick and tired of odometer watching. Secondly the pre varioram I bought felt a far more (IMO) exciting car to drive than the later ones. Thirdly, the car I bought had full Porsche OPC service history, low owners, all its books, compressor, toolkit etc etc and still her original radio which I liked. Fourthly, my 110K purchase had never had a replacement clutch and the only suspension renewal was an offside front ball joint, and nothing from OPC in the service invoices that she needed further work.

So as well as a full OPC service history she had had no replacement parts...... Unlike the 64K mile 993 that had had a stload spent on her. Maybe I'm a little mad, but that too me said a lot about how the car had been owned and driven.

I've now done 20K miles in my 993 and she needs money spent on her, however the previous 20K miles have cost me little.

The question needs to be asked, just why my 130K and still on her original clutch and its still working fine, her suspension was only replaced a few K miles ago because of worn top mounts, required little work compared to the 64K model that had new clutch and many other £1000s spent on her? She uses no oil and should (touch wood) not even require an engine rebuild for at least another 70K miles. The 993 engine is one of the finest Porsche have ever built.

Basically one had been used less but abused, the other driven and cared for. So why should mileage be an issue for those who wish to drive these great cars rather than worry too much on depreciation, which lets be honest over the last three years would be zero.

Can you imagine what it must feel like for an owner with an odometer reading of 99500miles at the moment though. Pure dread as it nears that silly mile mark 100K.

Only pitching in with high mileage Porsche experience here. Bought first 944 and then 993 at around 80K mark. then used as daily up until 220K, yes 200+ and both were completely reliable. However although 944 only needed a couple of suspension bits, the 993 did start to leak oil from the feed tubes under the engine which then drips onto the exhaust manifold - lots of smoke. So had to have the engine stripped down and decided then to have the engine rebuilt, but this was at 163k and no terminal engine wear was found when stripped. What I am saying is don't fear the miles. seller, condition and your own feeling about the car are more important.

I bought my 964 last year @ 124,000 miles. However, its service file is comprehensive and several inches thick. It had had an engine rebuild by a reputable company and the independent inspector's first words to me after checking the car out were "You've nicked it".

So, condition, condition, condition, I'd say.

Okay done deal bud
Balloon payment?

All joking apart miles don't mean anything (only in the UK is it an issue)
As long as work has been done when needed and serviced regularly the car will be sound.
Corrosion is the main issue on early cars and will cost more to correct if bad.
Interestingly my car is quite leggy and looking at the service record used regularly.
It runs better and sounds nicer than any of the low mile garage queens previously owned. They are designed to be used not tucked up with all the oil seals/gaskets drying up and perishing causing leaks etc.
