986 S - Smoking Engine Issues!

Hi guys,

Can anybody offer any possible views on an issue that's just started to occur on my 986 S?

It's a 99V, one of the first models in the UK and has covered 117k in that time, with a full PSH. No major issues up until this point, as far as records show.

Now, it's not used that often, maybe once in 1-2 weeks, so is sitting idle for long periods. However, a couple of weeks ago, when out for a run (and suitably warmed up), I wound the tacho out to 6-7k when accelerating away from a roundabout & looking in the rear view mirror, spotted a large grey smoke cloud exiting the exhaust, after changing gear / under load.

Whilst, I'm all to familiar with boxer engine layout and a very small discolouration of exhaust gases on start up, on a car that's been left for a while, it now seems to be a big plume of grey smoke on every start up, which then disappears, only to arrive again if I'm very energetic with the throttle.

Any thoughts?

Borked AOS?

Yes as above. Look at the AOS as a first port of call and go from there.

Air Oil Separator. About 50 quid for the part and a couple of hours labour to fit.

unlikely to be AOS as, from personal experience, it produces vast amounts of smoke all the time. Fortunately it was an easy fix but extremely scary when it happened .
