I collected my new (to me) Panamera Diesel yesterday which is pretty well specc'd with some nice extras. Love the car already and it's spot on for taking the family away for the weekend.
Rather annoyed to discover that I can't use my phone as hands free on it! I would have thought that as PCM3 it would have it as standard. I have an iPhone so I can't even put the micro sim in to see if that works.
It's weird though as I can connect it via Bluetooth to play music - but again this is strange as I have to instigate the connection from my phone every time - it doesn't auto recognise it. I think it is mad that the car was over 70k new and such a basic function is so poor. Porsche really do need to up their game with their ICE as its their weak point.
How much is it going to cost to get this sorted?

I thought the AC was faulty and them delved into the settings to discover you can select which bits of the car ventilation get the AC through them....very clever but the hands free would be better - especially as it improves safety!

If you can stream music via BT then you have at the very minimum got mobile phone prep; could be a setting issue or an early SW version - iPhone are HFP protocol BT, early SW versions could be coded for either one of the protocols (SAP or HFP) in order to use HFP the phone module had to be coded off you couldn't use both. Later versions allowed switching between the two.
The PCM3.1 is a powerful unit and has a lot of features; agreed there are a lot of additional cost functions that can be added - voice control, logbook, wifi services but that's just the way its always been.
Be aware also the the recent iOS addressed some 'connectivity' issues using BT - unfortunately what has generally occurred is that Apple change something and the vehicle manufacturers have to rewrite SW to accommodate those changes until Apple pulls the rug again......
The PCM3.1 in your car will more than likely need a SW update - let me know the SW version in your PM

I hope Pope is able to resolve the issue for you. I do have the phone option on my PCM3.0 and it is very handy that my iPhone pairs up with it a few moments after I get in the car. I know your Panamera is more refined than my 911, but I find on long journeys, particularly at motorway speeds, the Bluetooth solution isn't the best - probably due to the fact that you're using the phone's antenna from inside the car. So, I also have a pay-as-you-go full sized SIM in the PCM slot (it's not always pushed in because you can only have one phone option at a time, either Bluetooth or SIM). If I'm going on a long journey, I forward my iPhone to my PAYG SIM (the UK doesn't allow duplicate phone numbered SIMs - aagh!) and I push the SIM into the slot. Okay, you have to pick up the cost of the forwarded call from your iPhone to the SIM, but I find the better quality call (using car's antenna etc) offsets the inconvenience and stress of trying to keep the Bluetooth call going! Just a thought...

I can't understand how Porsche are still so bad at this. I don't really like the aftermarket look, so I struggled on with the PCM2.1 in my 987 for years. I have now changed it for a Pioneer unit and the difference is night and day.
That is fair enough as it is a 10 year old car, but I had a 2015 Cayman last week whilst mine was in for service, and the PCM on that is way behind the £300 Pioneer I have in my car in terms of functionality and usability.

I think all in-car phone systems are flawed at speed because of the road noise. The system picks up enough noise over the mic to believe there's voice and so shuts off the speaker so you can't hear the caller. The SIM just improves the antenna as all the other bits (mic and speaker) are shared between the Bluetooth and the SIM.Mine has PCM2.1 so I put a mObridge in. (Bluetooth connection)

Even the 991s have SIM trays on the PCM because Germany allows one number on multiple SIMs. I believe the UK is one of the few countries that doesn't allow it. Vodafone UK used to do it so there's no technical reason why not (although I believe someone said there is a technical reason why not), so I expect it's down to network greed! It's another topic that's been done to death.

PCM3 is one of the reasons I stretched to a 997.2. That is the very one that I have. Great bit of kit for £300, and as you say looks quite good too. If it didn't have the Pioneer logo, a lot of people wouldn't know. The PCM 2.1 still seems to sell for north of £500 on eBay, so you can actually make a profit by upgrading! I kept mine as I'll sell it when/if I sell the car.
