Just been driving the 991RS
Discussion
Luckily My good friend apolo helped wangle us being some of the first customers in the UK to drive the new RS. We had some coffee and breakfast then spent a god 2-3 hours with the car on the track, kick plates and sliding circuit. the car is a pre prod and after it has finished its duties at silly it will be either crushed or put in to the porsche museum. we couldnt drive it on the road because its a pre prod. it only arrived friday so the porsche guys were sort of learning as we go. its a shame i dont know the 991 gt3 well enough to be able to make any comparisons but my friend that had one made the following comments :
1) massive improvment in the braking department, much sharper - apparently runs same brakes as cup r.
2) front end is more planted and there is zero traditional porsche vagueness and super sharp (265 fronts!)
3) sounds better/louder with the additional induction rasp
I can only compare it to the spaz based on a wet day on a tight little track you cant get out of third gear on... its a bit early to say too much but it feels more composed, solid and porsche like. it feels like it could do a track day every day forever and not blow up. its very easy to drive and gets its power down well even in the wet. if i drove the spaz like i did on that track i would have been all over the place. The Chris harris video at Angelsey with the gt3 and spaz says it all really. When I did the experience day with the 3.8 rs back in 2010 coming from an m3 CSL I remember thinking what a handful I was buying... How much more of a focused drivers tool.. As car not really for beginners. Well driving down in 2015 through the rain in a spaz and jumping in to the RS it felt a little the other way round, the RS is defiantly the more manageable car. That does not mean it's boring because you can turn everything off and get to its limits but first impressions are id happily lend it to my mum for a weekend as long as she could see over the steering wheel...
Power wise ferrari is much mopre torquey low down. there is alot more meat all the way through the rev range. low down the rs felt a little lacking but its top end really is explosive. The big difference is even in the wet the RS could happily put most it's power down before spinning its rears where the spazwas spinning in 3rd gear... Will be interesting to see what happens between them in the dry...
In terms of feel the speciale defiantly feels much more alive - through the wheel, seat and pedals but i was never expecting the RS be able to match it because it just wouldn't be very Porsche... The spaz in neurotic and mad, the Porsche is cool calm and collected... The RS still offers plenty so no need to worry... i think the RS could be the faster car on a dry track. it can just carry so much speed so easily, the spaz is much more of a handful.
For real world fast driving and track work with good safety, harness, half cage etc I'm sure its the best in the business. for sheer thrills i think the spaz has it licked. I'm pleased to say they both attack their mission in different enough ways to enjoy both for their attributes.
final thought :
Maybe I liked it so much partly because how easy it is to drive... For others That are more than a billy I wonder if thy will prefer thi cars from previous generations? I won't but I think some will... Either way sensational car and simply can not wait to get some proper seat time with her. Porsche are on a roll at the moment, a lot of love here for the brand !

Whilst the RS was epic and ticked all the right boxes, been spoilt by the 991 GT3 and 918...
For me the star of the day was the GT4......what a car, from a fun interaction point drove like a well sorted 964RS.......
918 spoils everything in a way but the reality is it's a very different car. I'd drive this thing on track I never would the 918 due to being totally petrified at the speed I'd be carrying! Understand your point about the gt3 as you said it's a very similar car but around 20% better all round... Having never had one its all new to me. Mega car, we are going to. Have a lot of fun in them ! Only wish mine was coming start of September as there is a private Porsche track day at the ring at the end of that month... Would have been great to run it in on the way down then blast it round the track! For me the star of the day was the GT4......what a car, from a fun interaction point drove like a well sorted 964RS.......

Does this car finally cure the chronic understeer that has plagued all previous 911's?

Got to say the 991 was a massive move on from the 997 in this regard, even the c2. My turbo s has virtually none and I'm sure apolo will say the gt3 didn't either. All I can say is even on this tight twisty track in the wet with 265 section front as rear wheel steer there was absolutely zero, none, nada... The RS feels totally mid engined and very pointy.
Music to my ears... Cannot wait to collect my GT4 in September... RHD. Really pleased about the honest feedback for this cracking little car even after Porsche wound it back a bit on the BHP...

where does one go if you own a 458S lol it's been the wow car the last 12 months and continues to be the wow car to own.

Never mind the RS lets not forget that 27 of the worlds best jurnos, voted the 991GT3 best drivers car 2014, the 458SPZ came 2nd..."Power wise ferrari is much more torquey low down. there is a lot more meat all the way through the rev range. low down the rs felt a little lacking but its top end really is explosive. A couple of points for me that came out of the day, but it was wet....was the steering on the RS felt just like the system on the 997RS, think EVO commented on this also...
991GT3, owners will know what I mean when I say, if you let the wheel just rest in your hands, you can feel every bob and weave, did not get this in the RS felt more weighted, still good loads of feel feedback, but different to the GT3...lots of induction noise, massive powerful brakes, even more so than the ones on the Turbo S and GT3....
With regard to the GT4 even in the wet, after just couple of laps was able to find the sweet spot, ie, just the right amount of throttle, steering angle, 1mm up or down and the back end would lose traction.......this car is going to be a lot of fun.......

I don't listen to jurno's as every new car is amazing !
but Harris is 458, tiff is 458, Jethro 458 (most of EVO team are 458)
not sure who is GT3 over 458S
Don't get me wrong the GT3 is knocking in the times and is amazing thing, the RS is todays every ones "WANT" car I would def want one ;-) and a go in yours :-)
but I did like "woppum" comments on the 458S and it's still the car I would want over anything this side of £300k
NO bad cars it seems, if one can own both then that's the best thing.
