Telephone module vs mobile phone preparation ?

Please could some one explain in laymans terms the difference in the two and advantages/disadvantages in conjunction with CD-R plus and not PCM

Telephone prep is traditional bluetooth connectivity, so your phone still does all the comms, and the car acts like a large hands-free kit. The phone module means the car has it's own telephone, which handles comms, has it's own aerial, etc, remotely accessing your phone's SIM over bluetooth.

The latter means less battery drain on your mobile, and usually better reception as the car has a bigger antenna, but to get these benefits your phone has to support Remote SIM Access Profile (rSAP), rather than the simpler Hands Free Profile which is used by the telephone prep option. If you're an Apple devotee, you were historically out of luck - Apple doesn't currently support rSAP, only HFP, although they have promised that rSAP support will be included in iOS 9 (but I'm not sure on which handsets). Android has much better rSAP support, so the choice depends on what phone platform you support, and your confidence in Apple getting rSAP working any time soon.

Note that HFP is pretty much the common denominator, so if you have an iPhone it will still work with the telephone module, but it won't work any better than with the cheaper bluetooth telephone prep.

I think the options can effect SMS and E-mail synch too (Quite phone model dependant). All Full fat Samsung Galaxy S phone seem to work well with Rsap; Most Android HTC, Blackberries and a few Android Sonys also work well with it. If oyou want the CDR+ for Dab etc. then I would just go with the Telephone module, difference is only £100.

I have phone module with PCM in my spyder but I am thinking of not having PCM in gt4 only CDR+ so was wondering was it worth paying extra for phone module!

I've paid the extra £70 odd for the module in mine as I live in the sticks and it may give me better reception...

Disadvantage with the phone module is that SMS messages received stay on the car, and not on the phone. If you're SMS'd stuff you, you have to write it down or photo it to take it with you. You can then only reply from the car, not the phone. Had it on a loaner. Can't remember what it does with call logs.

I'd just get the mobile phone prep....

I've got mobile phone prep in my BGTS. Works a treat and am glad I didn't order and pay for anything more sophisticated
