Hi all, I've recently bought a 996 tiptronic, it's a 1998 3.4 version and on the whole I really like it. I have some questions re the transmission though which others might have experienced..? First question; in 2nd gear I can physically feel that it almost had two gears within one - in 2nd you feel like it's changing gear and then it does (or you do if in manual), does anyone know if that's normal?
Second question; in particular when the engine is cold (doesn't do it nearly as much when fully warmed up), I leave home and not long afterwards I'm in a 30 or 40mph limit so I'm just cruising at that speed and the revs (which are sitting pretty low) start to fluctuate slightly, only by around 50 to 100 rpm but you can feel it and the rev counter bobs up and down accordingly. I've cleaned the throttle body and I took the MAF out and gave it a soaking with electrical cleaner and neither made any difference at all. I've also done the throttle adaptation thing where you leave the ignition on for 60 seconds, this didn't make any difference either, although mine has the cable throttle so I'm not sure if it would?
It's done 92k miles and has a very full and comprehensive service history with Porsche specialists and I believe the transmission fluid was changed within the last 5k to 10k miles too.
Look forward to any feedback, many thanks!

I had a similar issue with the fluctuation on my 645ci auto - it was diagnosed as the mechtronix brain in the gearbox that was failing causing the issue. replacement was quoted about £2500 at the time
One of the recommendations was to have the gearbox oil flushed and replaced - even though it was sealed for life, but car was replaced before I got round to it.
Another issue that may have been linked was a 'hard' change between 4th and 5th on hard acceleration
Not sure if it would be the same issue on the porsche box but would be interested to know as i'm looking to get a tiptronic in the near future.
