I would send it to Maple of software upgrades don't work. Most independent specialist garages will be able to get it out of the car for you to send off or they may send it off for you.
Ring round the Porsche specialists in your area to get an idea of price. It's a bit of a pain to get them out as the technician has to undo the trim. They actually just slot back in without any need to take things apart again.
This advice is based on my experience with a 997.1, doubt the 997.2 is much different. Definitely talk to an independent, don't waste time at the OPC where nothing can be fixed and just needs an expensive replacement.
If the device is completely beyond repair you could look to replace with non-OEM device which will be far superior and have much better sat Nav on it!

I'm not sure which version of the software it has, Porsche Colchester suggested a software update but they didn't sound too hopeful.
It reboots constantly and doesn't ever actually get to the homescreen.

The update disc is a special tool; costs abour £2 from your OPC - I'd give that a go first (unless it can't run a disc)
Disconnect the battery for five minutes to see if it settles down enough to get a disc through it latest version pre-NAV update is 1.47; for 150 you can have the latest version of map data and SW though (version 2.24)
One more thing - do you have a SIM card in the PCM; have known them to get stuck in a boot loop occasionally.
