I'm back this time with a turbo
Discussion
For the past two years I have been without 911. I had said that my next pork would be a 991 Turbo however a new home, wedding and honeymoon adjusted my plans;)
Initially I had thought of a 997 4GTS test drove it and whilst good coming from a C4S it did not feel fast enough for me. This left the 997 Turbo. My thoughts were to compromise on noise and get one with Porsche warranty, this has historically provided me comfort when pushing the car and the warranty has been good to me.
First car I looked at was Bournemouth OPC it had an average spec and didn’t love it but liked the fact it had 2 year warranty. The car needed a fair amount of work, new tyres, major service etc but the salesman had a take it or leave it attitude.
Next Joel at RSJ had one come in, I hadn’t seen the pictures but know RSJ prep on the cars is high, went to the showroom but the spec wasn’t quite right for me.
My friends at 911Virgin did not have any cars and was starting to think it’s going to be another summer without hooning. For the last two years I’ve been receiving at least one email almost every fortnight asking me when the next London Meet is. This is actually what I miss most of Porsche ownership.
Then saw a car on JZM website, spoke to AUDI500 on here uses them a fair bit to get his view on them. He had just bought a 996RS and was going down the next day for them to have a quick look, ideal opportunity to go down.
Went there and as soon as I saw the car knew it was the right one, I had the same feeling when I bought my beloved 996 4S. The rear red lights, the PCCB, metal seat backs and centre console etc…
It was an interesting sales process, I have bought from Porsche West London who have known me for the best part of ten years and I have introduced many clients to them, so they are normally quite accommodating to my requests although not really interested in the product. The other Porsches have been from 911Virgin where the team treat you like a good friend and it’s an enjoyable process.
The car looks as new and Russ agreed to change the condensers, touch up the seat bolsters, do a geo, new front lip and a few minor bits and pieces. I also took out their gold warranty which includes the next service. This will be the first time I have had a non OPC warranty but with AUDI500 encouragement and the confidence Russ gave I said I would try it. Another point which I like is that I can change exhaust or do other reputable mods without affecting the warranty.
Maybe because I’ve been driving 4x4’s for a while but the car for me seems much faster than I remember, effortless power and the mid-range is so strong, especially compared to my old C4S where you have to rev the nuts out of it to make it move. The PCCB’s based on the limited mileage I’ve done are sharp and easy to use no squeal yet, the steering feels lighter than the 997 C4S. Obviously an exhaust will have to be added at some point
When I first drove the car on the motorway the steering was shaking above speed of around 55mph, I spoke to Steve at JZM who said it may be because the tyre has a flat spot as its been sitting in one place or wheel balance issue but to drive it and see if how it develops and if not they would look it at. I’ve put another 100miles on the car and bizarrely I think the steering is alright now.
Sorry for the long length of the post I am excited and looking forward to catching up with you guys again very soon.
Cheers - Cal

k all, I bet russ can't wait to see the back of you....
Not really sure that's required. If you've bought a car and it has a fault, no harm in asking for it to be fixed. Steering shaking certainly needs sorting and the roof lining rattle can drive you mad.

k all, I bet russ can't wait to see the back of you....Ah, just seen you're a TVR driver, which explains why you might not understand about rattles!

k all, I bet russ can't wait to see the back of you....Ive been on a London meet in the past and he is a top chap and a real enthusiast.
Enjoyed reading that - congrats!
It looks really sinister when clean in black. The PCCBs and Gen 2 wheels also make it look bang up to date.
Odd that you say the OPC car needed lots of work. My experience is that the OPC will replace just about everything in order for it to be an official Porsche Used car...

Thanks for the kind words and nice to see some familiar names.
Car went into JZM on Saturday and the steering wobble was a front wheel balance issue, the steering is now much better. Was also good to meet the mechanic who had worked on the car and will hopefully be working on it in the future. This I always liked in the past where the mechanic know and learns about your car.
Will organise a meet soon. Getting to gripes with the car, I'm finding it's a little too quick for town, have to manage my right foot;)
I have an idea of which exhausts are good but what exhaust tips are turbo owners adding to their cars?
Lastly here below are some pics of my new rads

Many Thanks! The OPC car was on 3mm tyres all round and it needed a large service in 3.5 months which meets their minimum standard but for me that would mean spending another £3/4k in a couple of months, I will now instead use that money to add an exhaustIt looks really sinister when clean in black. Probably could have done a deal if the salesman attitude was different.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
