Found a battery in my car... 996 Turbo
Discussion
...just by LH headlamp, behind the carpet, while swapping out a bulb.
It's a really small lead acid type battery similar to those you find in house fire and burglar alarm control panels and the like.
I have no idea what it's for, been searching "996 headlamp / trunk / boot / front / backup / small / whatever battery" but no joy, could not find it in the parts catalogue nor the workshop manual pdf.
WTF is this for!
It may be the original one so after 13 years likely up for replacement but don't want to just pull it off and discover than the ECU needs programming or something like that...

Come on guys.... this one's easy. It's a 996 Turbo. There's only one thing it could be -> dilithium crystals. Done. It's a really small lead acid type battery similar to those you find in house fire and burglar alarm control panels and the like.

OK OK more info, had a good look.
1) Not a factory fit. Yes, taped to the wing.
2) There's a box it connects to. Motorola.
So - What is this? Something phone related? A tracker of sorts made by Motorola?
...3) Just googled "tracker - motorola" and found it.
4) What next? Is it an antique by technological standards? In such case, do I just rip it off? The box I mean. The battery was only showing 1.7V so that's out already.

If it's a tracker; may or may not be monitored - you haven't paid a sub so probably not; though if you knew the operator you could have it activated if the worst happens; assuming it works still.
Find the tracker ECU; usually not far away from the battery - Tracker - brand name were fitted 'Approved' by Porsche for 4-5yrs but were dropped just before Cobra and the VTS was taken on (now operated by Vodafone Automotive).
If you find the ECU it will have an Active SIM card; we used to use one in a workshop phone to call Tracker if we had any issues - their number was premium rate (winning!).......

Thanks for this, would the "Motorola" box be the tracker ecu? When I googled, basically the results confirming what I have were ebay listings for the Motorola box and the battery, nothing else.Find the tracker ECU; usually not far away from the battery - Tracker - brand name were fitted 'Approved' by Porsche for 4-5yrs but were dropped just before Cobra and the VTS was taken on (now operated by Vodafone Automotive).

Secondly - do these immobilise the vehicle in any way? I will probably remove as this device might be contributing to static battery drain - certainly would if it were continually trying to charge a near dead battery, so I wonder whether removal is straightforward or otherwise.
That one shown doesnt have an imobiliser circuit , in fact i dont rember any of the trackers having an imobiliser , it will have the usual feed/earth wires with a grey wire which is the antena .
VTS on the other hand do imobilise.
The batterys DO cause drain issues so removing it is a good idear.
Thats also not a standard place for them to be fitted .. not going to list were they are fitted for obvious reasons , but the antena wire is grey , probably taped over with non standard tape and .... has to have an unobstructed view not blocked by METAL to the sky.
If i was searching for it .. id start there.

There were three versions of Tracker
Tracker
Tracker Monitor
Tracker Horizon
You have a standard Tracker there; the removable cover on the end was where the movement and ignition sensor attached on a Monitor unit. The Horizon units had two equal size units attached together by a heatshrunk cable and had GSM and GPS links to a secure operating centre. A bugger to hide and no mistake!!
There was no standard fit place - half the effect was achieved by fitting them in random places making them hard to find and disable - the battery is replaced every five years as a service item if you have a subscription. I had a bunfight with their service engineer when I fitted a Monitor unit to a 993 once - it was a C4 and while I fitted a clutch I also had a Tracker to fit - plenty of room above the diff thought I!! The location was detailed in a grid reference style during fitting and I was not flavour of the month whenvthe engineer went out to 'an easy battery swap' in the front tub (tee hee). Always hoped the owner appreciated the effort I'd gone to?!

From were its installed the wireing is probably taken off of the abs pump/cu , it should really have been fitted there behind the panel.
It will have a permanent feed , an ignition feed and an earth , grey wire will be antenna which will be run under the front pu , out through the headlamp wireing grommet i would guess.
Other wires will run to the battery you found.
As a rule of thumb anything with an immobiliser circuit will have at least 4 black wires going to it , they are the Cuts that need traceing , anything else can normally just be cut and taped.

That's great thanks. At some point aerial must have been removed as I have had the front bumper off a zillion times and never found anything. It will have a permanent feed , an ignition feed and an earth , grey wire will be antenna which will be run under the front pu , out through the headlamp wireing grommet i would guess.

Will remove prob sometime next week and update for the benefit of all.
