Hi all,

Unfortunately my 991 GT3 is going to be stationary until the new year. Hey, it's probably used to it due the engine change problems!!!

Can anyone recommend a suitable battery conditioner, preferably one with a cigarette lighter attachment?

Cheers,

Andy

I anticipate that virtually all the recommendations you'll get here are for CTEK. It's the brand that Porsche use.
MXS5.0 would be a good one to look at as a starting point. Since I have one, I can give a personal recommendation.

I read on Rennlist that the 991 GT3 uses an AGM type battery and thus needs a newer type of charger or to use the * ice setting ?

There's an AGM setting on all the most recent CTEK chargers.

IP65 usually means dust and low pressure water won't bother it.

IP as in Ingress Protection rating. First digit is solids (fingers, dust and other sizes), second is liquids (light drizzle, washdown, immersion etc).

Just looked in the User Manual and the model number it gives 1049 and also mentions that IP65 is the insulation class......

Many thanks all. The model 1049 appears to be the CTEK 5.0 which I have just ordered. It also has a cold/AGM mode whatever AGM is!

I have CTek and OptiMate but lately have been buying the Lidl brand - robust German design (and TUV/CE tested/approved) does everything the others do (also converts down to 6v if needed) - oh did I say what they cost?

Having searched this very question this useful thread popped up so will be ordering this CTEK charger - I had no idea an AGM battery even existed!

A follow up question: do you charge the battery through the cig socket or connect it to the battery directly? I used to use the cig socket in my 997 but have read in some places that the cig lighter switches off in the 991 so won’t work.

I used the cigarette light socket on my 991 GT3 and now use the aux. socket in the passenger footwell of my 991.2 TS as there is no cigarette, both work fine....

I've a flylead from the battery that pops up from inside the upper plastic vent panel and just lays there flat. It has a ctek connector. This Way you don't need open windows and the bonnet closes peoperly. Ivthen rest the ctek on top of the front tyre out of sight. 997.1 T

Lighter sockets in 991 do work. They do not switch off if they detect that a charge is in process. They can be temperamental but once you get past 30 minutes you are fine.

(Btw, if you do connect to the battery then don't go directly to the -ve terminal on 991. Search recent posts from tracknutz)
