Mileage effect on 987 Boxster values
Discussion
I bought my 2009 Boxster S last November, so just coming up to 12 months ago. In that time I've done around 13k miles, which is lower than usual for me as I took a 3 month break in the summer.
As I've just tripped over 40k miles it's started me thinking about whether I should sell it before i reach 50k. Mainly because if I was buying one that's probably the max. miles I'd enter in my search.
So should I sell (the timing for value would be good as I could sell in the spring) and if I do, what do I get next?
I thought the second question would be easy, as I've never had trouble deciding previously. I thought I'd go for a 997 S, but I've realised I'm not willing to take the risk on a gen I and a Gen II is out of budget. So this time I'm a bit stumped!
I don't want to just buy a slightly newer one with less miles, even though I love the car, that will just feel like money spent for no improvement. But pretty much the only other car that appeals is an Evora, and (for a number of reasons that I won't go into here) I'm not convinced that's the right option. Plus I realised today that a 981 S can be had for late £30k's now, which I find a far more appealing option.
So I'm now thinking that if the answer to my first question is that +50k miles doesn't have a particularly negative effect on value, then I think I will keep it and upgrade to a 981 later next year.
What are peoples experiences with resale, and if you've moved from Boxster to something else what was it? I have no need for anything more practical or economical, although I don't want an Exige or a V8 that does 17mpg either.

Regards mileage I wouldn't be worried about an arbitrary cut off at 50k. Anecdotally these cars respond better to being in regular use. When I'm looking for a Boxster (now on my 3rd) I generally seek out cars with slightly lower than average miles and focus on the ownership history.. When I see 3/4 year old cars in the classifieds that have done 5-10k miles I worry more than I would about a car that has done the average of 30-40k.
I think the well maintained 986/987 manual shifters will hold good value over the longer term as proper analogue cars in light of the 981 and future turbo charging/electric steering/ auto gearboxes etc..

Unless circumstances require you sell the Boxster, or you have simply tired of the Boxster experience and want o try another car, my advice is to hang on the to car.As I've just tripped over 40k miles it's started me thinking about whether I should sell it before i reach 50k. If you sell it you take a depreciation hit. Then you turn around a buy something else and this can only depreciate as well.
Also, you "know" your car well. You will not know another used car nearly as well. You could be jumping from the frying pan into the fire then.
Might add based on my experience with my 2002 Boxster at 40K miles the engine is barely broken in. My 2002 2.7l engine has clocked over 295K miles and still runs as good as it did at 40K miles.

Good point. I'd seen that values have remained strong since I bought, I wondered how much that would be affected by another 15-20k miles over the next 12 months. It sounds like it shouldn't be too bad. If you sell it you take a depreciation hit. Then you turn around a buy something else and this can only depreciate as well.
I certainly haven't got bored of the car, I love it, that's why I'm struggling to think of what comes after
