Following my post on RMS Issues I am now interested in who runs high milages what is the highest milage recorded for a water cooled flat six and does anyone have any personal horor stories associated with high milage cars.

I once did hear of a bloke who lived somewhere in southern Germany and commuted to Amsterdam on a weekly basis in a 2.5 boxster - had over 200,000 miles on it and he said it was "just nicely run in". A lot of boxsters/996s will do 100,000 miles with an RMS leak and the owners will never know. It will not stop the engine running and the only real damage it could cause would be a clutch failure - and I've never actually heard of this happening - just wait until the clutch needs done and then do it - at this time it will cost you £20 in parts and 0 labour as the clutch replacement involves the same process.

Hi Greg re fixing the RMS problem that seems my conclusion as well. On a high milage car RMS's seem to be a simple consumable that should be changed with a clutch.I can see why for people who do very low milages a year it is more of a problem as clutch changes would not be an issue for a garage queen.
But I am realy interested in first hand experence from high milage drivers. Are there any out there??

There was a Boxster buyers guide in 911 & P World around 6-8 months ago. The example they used and photographed had around 125K on the clock!

...I have a 996 C4 tiptronic ('99). One owner before me. Currently 84k miles. It's never had an RMS problem. I think it helps that it's a daily driver.

There's a Swiss guy with a 996TT on the renlist board with about 200,000 km on it -

" My car now has 198'500 km, original clutch, 319km/h (indicated), etc... :-)
Some (old) details about it here: www.911turbo.com/feature/2003-12/index.php
Feel free to ask for more if needed!
Greetings,
--Pierre "

But then the TT doesn't suffer the RMS issues, but it shares quite a few other components!

Isn't this a pain ?

Dealers who want work say the RMS needs to be repaced as soon as any oil seepage is noticed -- otherise the clutch will "get it"

But if you wait for this to happen, you may get another 100k miles out of it. Hence no RMS problem.

Of course anybody who has a car in warranty will get it done -- again and again and again.

Hence the car gets an unwarranted bad reputation ?
