That's fast.

I wonder what the 993RS would do on say Michelin Cups or Dunlop SSRs?

Does it matter?? I am sure Walter Rohl would be quicker than any of us if he was running snow tyres in August around the ring.

Don't be so miserable Paul!

Johnny, I wasn't trying to be miserable...just putting the emphasis on the driving skill of WR rather than tyres when such times are posted on ring lap times.

Of course its completly irelevent & slicks are in a waaaay diferent league to road rubber & even good drivers havent even got a tenth of the skill of skill of WR, just interesting as that both the GT3 7.56 & the 7.42 993RS times were set by WR.

Nice to know those prehistoric old air cooled beetles can still scoot along is all

Johnny, ref slicks & track tyres I am told there is still a big diference, after a Bedford day I was chin wagging to that slow old GT3RS peddler Mr Rance

I had tried slicks on my cheap heap for the 1st time that day & was amazed at the cornering speed difs over road rubber & was interested to know what the Mich cup sports I had also just bought- but not used yet, would be like in comparion.

He said Mich cups over road rubber huge grip diference, but slicks were another big step forward beyond them.

Also got to remember there are loads of types of slicks & the ones WR had on the RS might have been more along the lines of a real sticky qualifying type & might have only lasted a lap.

Walter Röhrl was timed round the Ring in a 993RS on road tyres in 8.10. I guess Cups would take it down to 7.50 - 7.55 or so.

Note the web site says
20,832 km 7,42 = 162 km/h Porsche 911 RS 3.8, slicks, Walther Röhrl.

I must admit I always interpreted this as a 964 RS 3.8, ie one of the limited runs with a wide body and big wing. Could be a 993RS though.

Anyone here doing the Ring on 7-8 March with the RMA? I'll be there in the RS - can't wait!

Doh!, yip you are of course correct, it could indeed be.

Still only 300bhp tho, vs the 600+bhp German tuners modded 996s, so a darn respectable time.

We carried out some dry testing ,back to back times at oulton, with new slicks and new mich cups, there was only 1 second differance around the full track.Granted the car was on the same set up for both types of tyres, temp across the tyres were good on both,so set up was not far out for the slicks.

Mel,

With that time you must have overtaken Clarkson on one of his first laps?
