Cayenne Diesel or Hybrid

Looking to buy a Cayenne Diesel S for the wife, the OPC was really pushing me towards buying the hybrid? Reason being that he was saying that Diesel cars will soon have restrictions in central London which is where I live. Anyone else heard of this or is it BS? I imagine the price of diesel cars would drop if this was to happen.

If sales people push hard, I assume the outcome is more beneficial to them than it is to me.

There remains an ever-present threat of increased charging for soot chuckers. Still no sign of it happening here. There is talk of 2020, so plenty of time to offload before the 'slump'.

Unless your are looking at a V8D, I'd go for the Hybrid.

Are you buying new or used? Any used/stock S Diesel will only have an EU5 spec engine (no AdBlue). The salesman is correct in saying that authorities (in particular London) are going to start charging vehicles, which don't meet EU6 regs, to enter low emission zones. If you order a new S Diesel, it will meet EU6 (using AdBlue).

If you buy an EU5 model it won't incur charges until 2020 but its residual value may slide the closer you get to their introduction. I suppose a PCP would protect you against this to some extent (ask them to max the GMFV).

I've had my S Diesel on order since July, it has been delayed due to the constraint of a part. I'm now being told it has now entered production and will be delivered in March so I suspect you'd be looking at ~3 months for a new one.

I'm a private buyer but I'm told that there are significant tax advantages to buying a hybrid if buying through a business.

It really depends what you want. I am on my second Diesel S. It's an incredible drive for an SUV, more torque than a McLaren P1, it's just a hoot to drive and is almost as fast as the turbo but with 35 plus mpg and a 670 mile range. I drive into Central London every week and it's true that by 2020 there will be restrictions on diesel cars ( which is a joke as it's the taxis and buses that create most of the pollution but hey ho).

The Hybrid will be cheaper to run and unless there are some big technical advances in hybrid technology will hold its value better but it's not in the same league as a drivers car. You will love the Diesel S every time you get behind the wheel.

Thanks for the advice. Went for the GTS at the end which was unplanned but the car sounds good for what it is.
