What series preceded the Carerra Cup?
Discussion
The current Carrera Cup GB started in 2003. Does anyone know what series preceded it? I ask because I recently bought an old race car for use as a track day car that apparently won the 'Porsche Cup' in 1993. I can't find any record of it or the driver Ian Harrison. If indeed it did win something back in the day I'd love to find some pics of the colours it ran in but I can't even find the correct name of the championship to search for it!

The series before the uk Carrera cup was the Porsche Cup. I believe this was the series immediately before the Carrera Cup was launched in the Uk ( using the purpose built 996 Cup car ). These were 993C2's modified by racing teams to strict rules laid down by Porsche. It was a popular series that attracted a very good standard of drivers as did the Carrera cup series that followed it.
Most original 993 'cup' cars were subsequently raced in different championships like the Porsche Open series, Britcar etc... There are a few cars still about in the uk and some residing in Ireland I think. If you have an original car it will be worth tracing its provenance. With the increase in popularity of aircooled 911's and the 993 not far from the grasp of historic championships it may well be a decent car to hang onto.

Thanks Steve very helpful. It's actually a 964 and apparently won the championship (or maybe its class, no idea) in either 92 or 93. The car is worth what I paid for it in it's own right regardless IMO but I'd love to get more info and some pics of it in action back in the day if there are any. I've been trying to trace the driver...sadly its not the boss of triple eight (BTCC) who was kind enough to reply to what must have been an odd email from me from his perspective... Oddly I can't find any info at all about either season anywhere online. I suppose given the date it's not entirely unsurprising I'm just so used to finding information so easily these days. Most original 993 'cup' cars were subsequently raced in different championships like the Porsche Open series, Britcar etc... Before the carrera cup was the Porsche cup. It was a pretty high profile series, you could race pretty much any porsche you liked, none of which were factory built race cars. There was 2.7rs, 928, 968, 3.2 carrera, carrera 2, 930, 944 turbo, 944s2. There were even some high profile drivers, Mike Jordan, Tiff Needel, Jonny Mowlem, Tony Dron, etc etc.
I also have a 964 from the Porsche cup era, looking at the build and the quality its built to a higher level than the cars that raced in the porsche club championship, it has a much more extensive cage, fully seam welded and mono balled all around.

Porsche Cup 1996 is the year you are looking for. Johnny Mowlem won the championship in the AFN sponsored 993. I was second in a 964 C2. Phil Hindley from memory came third in the car you own now. Call Phil at Tech9. I'm sure he would like to chat
Thanks Greame, been a while, hope you are well. I love how you know more about a car I bought last week than I do, have you been speaking to Matt? It's the blue car in your photo!
I emailed Phil at Tech 9 who very kindly dug out this photo of the old girl back in the day...
Apparently the car was also raced in the 92/93 seasons by a chap called Ian Harrison although I can find nothing about this online and Phil is no longer in contact. Ever heard of him?
It's white now in kind of fake brumos colours but they are coming off as we speak. (As are the RS stickers, cos it ain't)

FBLM. The series in 1992 was called the UK Porsche Supercup. I have the championship winning car from that year here with me. Driven by Craig Simmos, and is a genuine 964 RS UK RHD car.
I think the series in 1993 was the Porsche Club Pirelli Championship, heavily supported by Porsch GB.
I'm sure Ian Harrison is still around to ask about his car.

Hey FBLM I had a sneaking suspicion it was you. All good with me and I hope all is well with you.
Called into see Matt back in August with the missus. He took my Hellcat for a spin. Quite impressed. All went for lunch, great day.
The origins of Porsche club racing I believe began with the Giroflex Porsche Production Championship back in the 80's. I think for a while it then morphed into the BFGoodrich PPC. Back in 1993 / 1994 it was called the Pirelli Porsche Production Championship. In 1994 saw some 968CS's and 944 turbo's arrive. A good mix of 911's from 3.2, 2.7RS to 2.4T's.
1995 came the split of the Porsche Cup and the Porsche Classic Championships. Pete Chambers came out in a fresh 964C2. The Jones brothers with their fresh and truly awesome 928GTS. Prepared beautifully by Mike Jordan that thing had titanium door handles and a titanium pedal box. Made my old SSE look like a Beetle. A few 944 Turbo's. The Classic Championship was basically for 911SC and older.
In 1996 the 3.2 became a Class 2 Car. Protech built my 964 Carrera 2 and Phil built the car you own now to compete in the 1996 Championship. They were cracking races with some very good drivers. Phil Hindley, Mark Sumpter, Johnny Mowlem, The Jones Brothers, Bob Berridge, Stephen Ratcliffe, Des Winks, Mark Hales, Pete Chambers and a few I have probably forgotten.
We were all a lot younger and all had such a laugh. Crazy stunts and hijinks. Happy days

Hi Paul, I can't afford a real RS! Mines a poverty spec c2, that's what the v5 says anyway I think the series in 1993 was the Porsche Club Pirelli Championship, heavily supported by Porsch GB.

Thanks very much for the info, I'm trying to track him down. It appears to have all been just pre-internet so information is really hard to track down.

ps I'm completely smitten by the red RSR but the Mrs said no!

Chris. Steve ran the 993 liveried York car Phil had the 964. Previously Steve raced the 968CS with Mellors Motorsport alongside Dessie Winks. Phil ran a 944S2 prior to his 964. You remember ?.
Buy the way FBLM Ted191 was also one of the top chargers. 2.7RS then a 944 turbo. Always hard but fair

Graeme. Do you know where we can access the race results for the championship? I've also been trying to trace the history of my 993 race car but like the OP finding it difficult to get the info.
They used to be on the porsche club web site, but I think they've now been removed.Who raced your car ?
