Rusty Nuts - Cure?

I assume due to some over-zealous wheel cleaner from the previous owner, the wheel nuts on my Cayman are starting to look a bit worse for wear.

Can I just paint them? My only worry would be that the paint would flake off were the nuts actually used. Similarly, I wouldn't want replacements to do the same within a few months.

Easy answer is "just live with them", but I thought I'd ask.

I took mine off, wire brushed them and sprayed them with silver paint. Worked a treat.

I painted mine a few times and they rusted again. Have now replaced with a set of chrome ones- not cheap but a permanent fix.

I did that but sprayed them matt black. They look fine.

Design911 and others do stainless bolt kits. Only long term solution I found.
