I'm curious why people like the pdk gearboxes?

I have a manual 997.2 C4S and had a 991.2 C2 with pdk as a loan car for 10 days and wasn't impressed by it all and interested to hear why people like them.

Thanks.

I'm a fan but to be honest, am struggling to think exactly why. I've got a 997 GTS and drove a manual, bucket seated GTS after the test drive in the PDK. I just preferred the PDK and suited my needs better. I don't do track days and although I have my moments, most of the mileage I do wouldn't be benefited by a manual 'box. I actually like the paddles and for me, gives me all the involvement my driving skills command. That's probably your answer.

I also think PDK 'fits' the newer models...I'd love a sorted 964/993 and hypothetically if there was a choice, I'd take a manual 'box over PDK all day in one of those.

people not that interested in cars but feel they should be !!! ;-)

same with eps on the basic 991 and 981 cars, I could never buy one and would rather have PDK and real steering that a 981 gen 1 EPS.

but you don't hear about eps as much, and every one on here says how happy with the feel of eps on these cars.
I could say why do people like the new Spyder, or why do people buy a 911 turbo , or even the GT3 PDK !!!(what a thought an auto GT3 , yuk) etc etc all cars which don't appeal to me at all !!!

people just want to go fast with as little skill as possible and all this tech allows it and makes people feel like a racing driver.
I don't like PTV either but all new cars seem to do this now which is a right arse.

I am close to going back to Lotus before I am to old too get out of one, new cars suck for the hobby/driver imo and older porkers are too expensive now. plus hassle to look after.

Different cars for different needs suit different gearboxes. There is no right and wrong.

I personally think the GTS suits PDK (for my needs ie mixed driving) and the GT3 PDK S....fantastic gearbox for a fantastic engine......equally the 981 GT cars suit 'manuel' especially the back to basics Spyder being in the same ethos as the 991 R.

Would you want a 458 or 488 'manuel' if it was available......probably not. Similarly the next gen GT3....depending on intended use.....although anticipated sales are likely to be similar for both gearboxes.

I have a 997.2 Turbo S and just love the PDK box. IMHO It suits this car very well.

I did some 1/4 runs at the old Top Gear runway and the VBox shows how little speed is lost in changing gear PDK vs manual.

I only use the paddles to change down at certain corners. Not having to change gear means I can concentrate on the road at speed.

If you love it you love it. If you hate it you hate it.

ps - yes I know 2nd post in about 9 years! - I lurk here - post in 911uk forum

Would I want a manual 458 or 488, yes in a heartbeat. Flappy paddle version no thanks but then I keep getting told I don't think like other people..

I think I just like cars that demand some effort from the driver and pdk changes the effort v reward balance in favour of reward for less effort but each to their own.

F1 cars have auto box so why does everyone lose their minds when DSG/PDK etc is mentioned?

Because learning to change gear, heel & toe etc takes effort in order to attain a level of skill.

One of these days you'll learn to provide your own opinions solely, rather than to misrepresent those who have different views to you.

In that case, will you spent all your time on the Lotus forum telling everyone else their choices are wrong and that you know more about car set up than Lotus?

Manual makes me feel like a big swinging dick.

But as I commute 80 miles a day in mine, 20 miles of which is stop start, I prefer a PDK with my cocktail sausage.

Genuinely interested and not trying to get a bite here, but how often do people heel and toe on a drive out? I can't, but watching videos of those who can, I completely understand the additional involvement/reward you'd get, particularly over flicking a paddle. I guess it's nice to have the option.

PDK convert here and a big fan. The performance and capability of PDK is incredible.

If my journey was limited to just a weekend country blast, then a manual box would do. But, with a 100 mile daily commute with half in stop start traffic, a manual is a massive chore and purges any joy. PDK maximises the opportunity for fun in this sort of journey - I find.

And it's easy to put it in manual and change gear with fingers - not a lot different than changing gear with palm of hand; sure there's no heel and toeing, but really, with Porsche's 7MT manual box doing the rev matching, why would you?

Pressing a button is not the same as matching a clutch with a gear change. If you like auto boxes then that's fine. But for me a manual is more involving and more fun.

PDK in my DD is easy in traffic but when I want to hear the engine rev and have some fun I shift the gear lever over to manual, forget the paddles, and it's far better than a manual box. Quicker to change, full throttle changes, shifts multi ratios as quick as I can click the "switch" and no hefty clutch, plus lovely blips on downshift.

My instructor at the recent PEC "warm up" said he never uses manual mode in the PDK cars as Sport auto is far quicker round the tracks.

Manual = "involved" more?
Maybe, but would a starting handle mean more "involvement" too?

If you like automatics then that's great, but don't come out with idiotic statements like your last one.

The snob in me doesn't like to call it an 'automatic'. It's not a 50's slush-o-matic, it's more than that.
It's a 'Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe' goddammit!

Good job they build options to suit everyone.
