Yeah, azuro is right , most cars (ie over 90%) dont have a problem with RMS , the few that do get plenty of air-time both from unfortunate 996 owners and people who don't own 996s and don't like 'em either. The word from the workshops is that tiptronics are unlikely to have RMS problems. Its all reflected in the secondhand price , hence some 996s look cheaper than 993s. Hey , nothing is perfect !
Go for it, you get a good 35k's worth of fast car thats a lot classier than a merc/beemer/audi/jag etc and the handling is fantastic!

Yes I have owned a 996 and no, I would not buy another- There is a more serious issue with the engine than the RMS-They appear to have a problem with cylinder bores (get in touch with ninemeister on this board-he is far more knowlegeable). I am not sure if it affects the later 3.6s. It results in a new engine and these seem to be supplied by Porsche on cars with Full Porshce History but I am now hearing of cases where they are saying No-Leaving owners with a £10k bill!
I didnt not suffer the problem but my car was low mileage. Talk to Tower Porshce also-they had 4 996s awaiting new engines last time I visited. They just told me to steer well clear of 996s.

I think the whole engine problem is grossly over exaggerated as a result of web chat. Yes it is unfortunate if your engine goes pop and yes there are a number of people here and elsewhere who belly-ache the problems BUT I think you'll find that the members of this board really are the minority and that there are a vast majority of people v happy with their cars and don't go anywhere near a web chat.
Buy the car and ignore the scare mongers!!

Oh dear, are you for real?
While its is entirely your right to do so, could I ask why you seem to trawl through this board and go on and on about the clearly isolated issues with your car long after it has gone?

I had a 996 that had its engine replaced free by Porsche. I was not fussed, as it did'nt cost me a bean or cause me any hassle at all.
And in Kamals defence, I have been to Tower Porsche who also have a number of 996 in for a rebuild.
I believe that that 3.6's are much less prone. And tiptronics seem Ok too.
Having said that , I also believe that there are plenty of high mileage early 996 which have not had a problem.

FYI- My car did not have a catastrophic engine failure whilst in my ownership.
I am sorry for trying to provide assistance to another Pistonhead member....but somehow I thought that was the purpose of the board. Does this now mean that if I no longer own the 996 I am no longer able to distribute knowledge!
If and when your engines do go "pop" then at least you will be armed to battle with Porsche in the Highcourt-because you will have facts and other instances of engine failure-pre the internet- it was very difficult for consumers to amass such knowlege but now manufacturers like Porsche, Mercedes, BMW who have compromised so much on quality and continue to raise prices can be challenged.
Look in Portiacraft-yet another 996 with a new engine by Porsche! Talk to some specialists to get an idea of the problem..It may only affect X per cent of Porsches but how can anyone suggest that this is an acceptable risk for a brand that prides itself on quality?

Azura, anyone would think you had a vested interest in defending the RMS problems on the 996...
Yeah right. I'm as unbiased as one of these:
But seriously, I'm not defending it, I'm saying it is a problem, but not to the catestrophic levels sometimes suggested on here.

Funnily enough, I just received a questionairre from PCGB regarding the RMS issue which they intend to publish shortly. Surely the results of this survey will have an influence on how Porsche handles this issue. I suggest all 996 owners who are members of PCGB ask for a copy of the questionairre if they have not yet been contacted.
