My 996.2 C4 has decided not to start. Battery appears fine, showing 12 volts, but turning the starter motor only generates a series of clicks, no engine turning. Plus the alarm goes off after a few seconds of attempting to start. Not sure what the root cause is.

Answers on a postcard or potential solutions gratefully received as I wait for the RAC to arrive....

Usually the battery in these circumstances. It should be reading at least 12.5 volts.

Agree my money's on the battery. It has the volts but can't deliver the current required to crank the engine. If you jump started it it would run because the alternator would be supplying the required current. Run it for long enough and the battery may even recharge, but would it hold the charge? Time for a new battery I think.
