996TT or 996C4S or 997 ?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I am coming from a TVR Cerbera Red Rose, and looking to spend £55-75k on a porsche.
I am having some problems trying to decide what to go for in my price range. Given performance and depreciation can anyone give me a short summary of what they would choose and why. Which would be best if I wanted a Cabriolet option?
Cheers.

Same choice here myself 6 months ago.
I had a 996 C4S & was deciding between a 996 TT & a 997s, I had £70k to spend.
The C4S is a fantastic car, so is the 997, but decided on a 996 TT.
At the end of the day they are all fantastic cars and I would readily have any of them but with a choice its the Turbo for me.
A friend who posts on here also just bought a 996TT over a C4S or a 997.

every time i see a 997 i think 'beetle' - same lights and curved bonnet. aesthetically they just don't do it for me, but not having driven one i can't comment on that.
i own a c4s but clearly the tt is the better car especially in x50 format as you will no doubt know. the thing i love about the c4s is the switchable exhaust - if you end up with a turbo just make sure you get a noisy exhaust - rip a hole in the silencer if you have to.
depends what you want to spend. you can get a c4s now for about 52k but i think a good tt will still set you back 65 or so. plus ownership costs of the tt will no doubt be higher.
either way you can't lose.

Pleasant dilemma... but for me 996TT all the way - can't see why one would want a 400+ bhp car not to have a roof ? Anyhow horses for courses on that front I guess - but basic car it will always be the 996TT - so tuneable too. I am a big fan of LHD for cost saving on UK cars, import is easy too...
...so if you like the look of a 996TT Cab for approx £70K try http://tinyurl.com/3vpvy

After your TVR, the 996 C4S will feel slow. It is a very handsome beast though. The 997 is a lovely car, but it has got plebty of depreciating to go through.
The 996 Turbo is a sensible choice. It is fast obviously. However, coming from a TVY, you may find it a little too "complete and failsafe" due to the 4WD and traction control etc.
I'd go for a 996 GT2. They are 2WD and hairy as hell if you want it to be, but they can be used every day (according to GuyR on this board who has a 550 BHP version). They also look better than the Turbo. They can be picked up for 65-70 grand and they must be reaching the bottom of their depreciation curve. You won't lose much on one of these if you buy at this price. They are far more exclusive than the Turbo as well, more desirable and special. A total bargain.

Good choice, coming from a TVR it will suit you down to the ground. It didn't feature in my choice because its just too raw for me, but if you are used to TVR's then sounds ideal.

did the first owner
all over the interior? if ever there was an example of spec effecting price, then that must surely be it!

This car's price isn't a one off due to its interior colour.
Have a look around, sub-70 grand GT2s are out there.
Thanks, for the replies, they have been really very useful, I think I know which way I am going, 996 GT3 or 996 TT (with a sunroof!).
Odd question, but I know the 996 GT3 has 2 front seats but are the rear seats or places where the seats where usable in anyway (thinking 5 year old and trip to the shops). If not guess it's the 996TT then!
Do like the appeal of teh GT3 though, colours and the more hardcode look.
Cheers

Can be used if there's no roll cage, but no seat belts and probably not insured if your rear passenger is injured in a collision.
kingstonking said:Sorry to disagree with Harris_I but if you've got the Recaros in a GT3 you won't access the rear area anyway as the seats don't tilt.

I had a 996 TT from new for 12 months, and point to point it is superb, massive torque...but....you'll be bored with it within 4 months. 4 wheel drive kills these cars, removes that degree of feel and driver input. I'm not a 'beardy' who continues to sing the praises of the 2.7 RS, but having had a MK 1 GT3 and several others in different guises I can honestly say that whilst the TT was the fastest, I can't really remember it. Go 2 wheel drive....only my opinion.

Also might argue that residuals would be better.
