Inverted commas as not sure my 996 passes as total poverty, but it's definitely at the more budget conscious end of Porsche ownership.

Anyway, not using it much these days and thinking of moving it on after a year or so. Head says that as I'm not using I should just sell and not bother replacing but heart would still like a toy...

So, those people who have moved on from cheaper Porsche ownership , where did you go next? In my case I'm not in a position to add more money from the deal but I'm just interested generally - does your first Porsche lead to more?

Had my 2.5 Box for about 18 months - upgraded to a 2.9 Cayman and have had that for just over a year.

Change in circumstances (I now have a garage, and daily transport is more or less covered) means I'm investigating a switch back to Poverty Pork status, perhaps in a 996.

Maybe you can check out of Poverty Pork, but you can never leave.

I went from one modified 986 to another and carried on modding biggrin Didn't need anything else as this car is just for fun. Other transport needs catered elsewhere.

I went from early 986 S to MX5 Mk3.5 PRHT don't miss the Pork at all. I also sleep better knowing the engine won't kill itself or the Tip box die costing £2K+

I went from a mk1 MX5 to a 2003 986 Boxster 2.7 in 2010, then back to a mk1 MX5 in 2012. Still got it. Totally different car; the Boxster would be great as an only car while the MX5 is rarely used as a second car. But it's a far greater contrast to my daily barge.

However, I'm pondering a 987.2 or 981 Cayman to replace the barge next time as my everyday car. Wonder how much I'd actually use the MX5 then.

As per the guys above - I went mk1 MX5 to 986 S then back to a mk3 MX5. I enjoyed the boxster, but it was starting to need a lot of bits - and having done a trackday in it I realised that it was going to be heavy on consumables - I would say that the mazda is more exploitable on the road (i.e. I can use more of it's performance, compared to just scratching the surface of the boxster), and easier to approach the limits on track while keeping costs reasonable (at least for me as an average driver).

I am sometimes tempted to look into a 987, but I think it would be as a road car only, and keep the mazda (or a 7) for when I wanted to do a trackday.

The "Duratec" is a good engine but if you are using it on track it is supposed to be sensitive to oil level. I understand that you need to keep the oil near the top of the dip stick. Plenty of case history of mx5 engines seizing due to low oil levels

Interesting the number of MX-5s that are mentioned.

Sadly I'm not in a position to be able to afford a Turbo - though I'd love to! wink I can see the appeal in a more back to basics form of motoring though, be it MX-5 or a 7-alike.

I have a Mk5 Golf which takes care of daily duties, most of the time the 996 is sat in the garage.

Yup my local Mazda specialist has done 2 x Duratec engine changes. Both run low on oil & toasted. Some apparently use oil some don't. Mine doesn't luckily.

I think this is the problem with the 996 combo. It is very useable as a daily type car. But, if you have a 4 seat daily and are also transporting passengers in your 996, then you aren't really going to be hooning it anywhere with them on board. It makes more sense to have something a bit more focussed, selfish or different to the daily.

MX-5 and 986 interchange, whereas fewer 996 owners go that way.

If it's a toy a Caterham is hard to beat and the back to basics feeling is hard to beat.

I've got to agree with that - however, poverty Pork must be <£10k and that's not going to get you much in the way of a Caterham. Different matter if you elect to spend more, of course, and they hold their value well.

I do wonder how much maintenance a Caterham or an Elise would require if I used it irregularly and not at all for periods. My MX5 just starts and goes, perfectly reliably. If I had to spend time fettling a toy I didn't use much, I can see it being used less and less.

Another Germanophile here smokin

I've owned my 2.7 986 (2000) nearly 5 years now, and being used both daily and fun car along with my VW Beetle Turbo.(previously 16 years of golf 4 motion ownership hehe)

I personally can't see any other option in the value that 986 offers less than 10k. Lotus Elise or Z3 was on my radar many years ago but I do not think they have the same fun of mid-engine driving. The next would be consolidating all into one car, manual 993 or 997.2 but I do enjoy the flexibility of having two reliable german cars in less than total 30k! biggrin

I've gone from a 2.7 986 to a 996 that's a year older.

I can see me keeping the 996 for a good long while - it's a joy; plenty of things to do on it (it's not a basket case by any means, but any 18 year old car has plenty of little things to look over)

Had our 2.7 03 Boxster for 5 years/45k miles & we can't bear to part with it, so with that in mind I'm off in half an hour to view (& hopefully buy) a 997.1 to scratch my persistent 911 itch.

Thats it, you've peaked in car ownership.

There is nowhere else to go without significantly more money being thrown at it.

Even a 996 Turbo isn't double the car a 996 is.

On a value for money basis 996/986 are unbeatable.

If your budget is £5k to £15k you aren't going to find a better car, ever.

The 996 / 986 low price is a unique combination of fantastic car with unfounded poor reputation....might never happen again!
