So you cannot by 4 of the cars they tested and cannot buy the cars which came 1st and 2nd !

Sign of the times I guess.

Funnily enough I tweeted Evo saying exactly that, there was a defence from them saying you could buy them, albeit not new. Absolute nonsense, I had a GT4 deposit returned and cannot even put one down for the next GT3.

Well done on two counts, young man/old sage (delete one as necessary). Firstly, a succinct, well argued, well thought out & cogent piece of work, well worthy of discussion (I can turn the teacher in me off now): secondly, congratulations on writing it at such an ungodly hour!

Please accept the above not as patronising pap, but as an example of how forum discussions should be conducted.

Oops! Incoming!!!

So does that mean ECOTY can only be taken seriously when a Porsche wins or what?

Given that to some, ECOTY is the Holy Scripture of whatever Religion

Makes a lot of sense. Most mags do focus on the 'new car' segment.
...then there are the brand mags - e.g. Porsche mags which have a mixture of new cars and a spotlight on some variant of GT3 or RS smile

Maybe these forums are the real live journalism. It's all about pricing! smile

Interesting that cars placed 1st and 2nd both have electric steering with zero steering feel. In fact almost half of the 12 cars in ecoty have electric steering.

Reading the editors introduction on the first page was the end of my EVO subscription. Justifying why two new cars this year that could have won but were not included because they were derivatives of previous models. It was obviously setting up a win for their favourite brand and ironically the ultimate derivative model.

I'd been thinking of cancelling my subscription for a few months anyway, this pushed me over the edge.

As well as the 911 is the Golf also not just another derivative of a 3 year old car? Same with the Huracan, M4, and AM Vantage. Can't think of another FWD hatchback doing so well in the past.

Its a shame they didn't include the Dodge Viper ACR.

FWIW I read last months Evo which was given to me as a freebie at the Evo track day and its been a good read so far. I agree its tough for these guys to keep giving glowing reviews of performance orientated cars which really aren't moving the game forward from an emotional perspective. Think what it will be like when in 10-20 years everything is electric with petrol engined like noise blowing through your speakers in 6, 8 or 12 cylinder flavours frown

Reckon you're at least 5 years behind the curve. I kept my subscription religiously for years, but finally lost my patience and cancelled it due to the poor quality of the articles, excessive super/hyper car worshipping features (and Monkey Harris becoming a frequent contributor).

Trott's editorial was bad enough but the kicker for me was buried in the fast fleet section by Dan Prosser talking about the Mini JCW Challenge. Aside from spending three quarters of the article justifying why the Mini wasn't included in ECOTY rather than talking about the long term ownership of the car, he made a throwaway comment which is a sad reflection of Evo's downfall. I paraphrase but basically one of his reasons was: a 228bhp featherweight hot hatch is just not powerful enough for the Yorkshire Dales test route compared with the more powerful competition. I guess it's no longer about the thrill of driving then?

I feel a lot better after reading all your views. I to settled down and the minute I read the editorial I also knew the writing was on the wall. The tweet they sent back was a touch defensive. It is annoying that you cannot even order the winter. I had a GT4 deposit down, specked the car and then got my deposit returned. That is after buying a Cayman R and a 997 GTS. I was not allowed to put a deposit on a 991 GT3.

It seems that enthusiasts have to look elsewhere, but there is plenty of competition.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the magazine. I agree that my subscription was cancelled the second I read the editiorial.

Regarding the last ten or so posts; cmoose has hit the nail on the head and it got me thinking; there is an obvious gap in the market. J, I think you should put yourself forward, an ambassador if you will, for the lost generation who look for the ultimate in rewarding, tactile and raw driving experience, regardless of technology/era/pocket lining... I know is it a tricky market in which to break through as an independent; I have a friend Phil Royle who can testify the difficulties here, but should you manage to find the right balance and with a bit of luck, there is surely an opening here???

I'm glad others out there recognise that what wins a journalist's poll isn't always what the committed petrol (piston)head demands or seeks.

Modern cars are as cmoose describes, and journalists follow the path of treating the 'latest' product as the pinnacle of automotive attainment. After all, they won't get priority access to the latest confection if they don't massage the manufacturer's egos: describing/trashing product bites the hand that feeds you & ain't gonna get them anywhere.

Evo are in a bind: they need/crave the oxygen of new cars, BUT they need us, the most interested, nay most committed, petrol heads to stump up the wonga for their wares.

Unfortunately, anodyne cars are a product of the age. Everything is being reduced to simulacra. Steering is by electrical impulses rather than torsional input, exhaust notes are manufactured & modified by symposers, decisions that were managed by the seat of one's pants, are now forestalled by algorithms. That's why, those who read motor mags, as lovers of cars, feel a real sense of disjuncture, as the very thing that makes the driving of a car well so invigorating is being slowly and surely bled away, with the tact complicity of motor manufacturers & motoring press.

Those cars, those that provide a semblance of tactility, are premium products: & don't Porsche & the rest of the manufacturers know it. They use those models as halo products. Can't get one? Too right! Short supply & prohibitive costs legislate against the plebs getting their fill. I assume, it costs little more to produce halo products than bread & butter models, if one factors in economies of scale. Correct me if I'm wrong but if manufacturers removed some of the expensive & numbing 'technology' from their motors, we could get our agency back with respect to our motoring, with a quantum leap in driver satisfaction.

There are other ways of approaching this topic, of that I'm sure, I look forward to all comments, both for and against my views.

I packed it n with Evo years ago. Far too smug and focused on hyper cars, top end Porsche and Ferrari. The buyers guides sub quality compared to that easily found online.'I'd sooner read threads here. Not long for the print world I suspect

I thought it was just me! Funnily enough the reason i let my evo subscription lapse was because a lot of the writing (trott, prosser...) reminded me of the drivel i can read for free on here!

I too have been thinking Evo is past its best for me,I have been a subscriber for 15 + years and apart from Dickie Meaden ans SSO it's lost appeal for me

I think I need to realise the golden age of motoring as I might define it has been lost in electric gizmos pretending to be driver aids and scrutiny by cameras fixed, mobile and in other road users cars and lorries, I remember getting back from Reading rock festive late about 130 miles at night in a Golf at (maybe a bit more) than 60mph average without the use of motorways a feat I never seemed to repeat in my recently sold Ferrari or will likely attain in my Boxster Spyder or everyday BM.

Let's just face it might be a generational thing like the old farts I used to mock in TR6s and Jensen Healeys when I was in my XR2.
