2017 RSR

Gets revealed tomorrow at the LA autoshow.

Given that this may point to the future of the road car at some point...maybe..

What do we think it will be? Turbo'd, "mid " engined, RWS? We know they need to up their game considerably in this class to comptete at the sharp end again and that early pics a few months were of the front of the car only. All will be revealed tomorrow but i get the feeling its a major departure from the format we all know and love.

Yes things are to change ........back in the good old days they made two thirds the grid in GTN ........ 33-40 cars a year , now a handful ....

Unlike the Ford GT and Ferrari 488, however, the 911 RSR is not turbocharged. Instead it’s powered by new four-litre water-cooled flat-six. The old RSR continued to use the illustrious Mezger engine, but with the 911 Cup and R powered by a more modern unit, Porsche took the decision to have a uniformed engine structure. The new engine also gets the direct injection and with LM-GTE rules designed to allow both turbocharged and atmospheric engines air to the engine is restricted to allow a level playing field. Depending on the size of the restrictor used the RSR’s engine can produce up to 503bhp.

Unless they have had some kind of deal with the ACO to get rules in their favour, staying NA they are just going to get killed by the turbo race cars. And engine in front of the rear axle means it's no longer a 911 imo.

But they couldn't call it the Cayman RSR could they?

The rules apparently even out NA vs. turbo : we will have to wait and see.

1243 kilos --- ten years ago they were 1100 kilos with 430 bhp --- ?

Interestingly Evo say rear engined and Autocar mid engined --- either way if the engine is in front of the rear axle and the gearbox is behind, then it must be a Cayman !

Is this where the GT4 is given permission to overtake the GT3 --- and becomes the new 911 ?

imo yes. Sticking on a 911 fascia onto a mid engine sports prototype GT1 didn't make it a 911 either.

Agreed. The RSR does at least look like a 911!

Below bumper line does look horribly unresolved in aesthetic terms.

As for it being mid-engined, well the cream of the GT 911s don't have actual rear seats, so it's no big deal really IMHO.

I love everything about that. Looks aggressive & purposeful, NA engined, probably great balance being MR too.

But it's not a 911. At all.


The GT1 is one of my favourite racing cars of all time, but that's not a 911 either.
