Boxter Ownership???
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm thinking of taking a step into the impracticle from owning my Audi S3, which is great fun and very practicle...
I think the Boxter is great and I'm thinking of getting an older 97 /98 with full Porsche service history. Was looking at an S2000 as well if anyone has owned both would love to know about there experiances.
Are these cars reliable? I thought my Audi would be but just having to pay a small fortune on an engine rebuild after piston ring issues at 60k miles not impressed. What are the servicing costs like minor / major? anything I should look out for if going for a highish millage car?
basically, what do people think of owning there boxter and how reliable are they?
cheers guys.

Hi
If you search on here or other porche forums you will find a few horror stories - but this is to be expected (people mainly write when something is wrong)
main things with boxsters are RMS (rear main seal) costs a lot from porsche to fix, and it can just keep going time after time, but good independent will do for about £350.00
also heard stories of 5-7yr old engine blowing (but this isn't common) However I have a 1999 have had some teething problems, but still love it!
servicing is actually cheaper than bmw (through an independent) tyres cheaper than my old 320ci
Basically, in my opinion:
1) buy private, you'll get more for you money
2) get one with full porsche service history. Air Con, decent colour are essential for re-sale value (I'd try & get, clear lenses for front, upgraded stereo & wheels, 3 spoke steering wheel & leather interior, traction control (PSM?) also good option.
3) get an inspection done on the car by porsche garage (£150) or porsche specialist (DONT USE RAC or AA, they are crap!)
once inspection done, you can negotiate price with any bits that need doing or get them to fix before buying. Also, if you get the inspection done by porsche themselves £150, then they can offer you a warranty for £750 (which covers RMS, Engine replacement etc...well worth it if you ask me.
any questions, let me know
I have 1999 black, with hardtop 60k miles may consider selling for £19k

I`ve done over 60K miles in Boxters and they`ve never let me down. I`ve also never had (thus far!)any RMS problems, and they`re pretty cheap to run.
Now is a good time to buy - they`ve dropped in value since the 987`s announcement. This will pick up a bit in the Spring and then settle down a bit so you can probably bag the odd bargain at the mo`..

Yes, and having 2 trunks, one on the back and one up front is really practical I find, you can really pack up everything you need for 2 people for long journeys/holydays.
Plus the back trunk, above the engine doubles up as a microwave/oven if you put foodstuff and drive spiritedely for 30 minutes
I will stick my neck out and say its the most practicle car in its class. 2 boots hold a surprising amount, I have taken mine over to france to by booze and was surprised at how much you can get in it.
As for reliability and running, mine has again been great, much cheaper to run than my previous car, tyres last well it being a well balanced car etc etc etc.
Its time to sell mine really as I am moving house but I just cant bring myself to do it..

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your replies, makes interesting read.
I really like the idea of the Porsche inspection and warranty, how much would I be looking at for the main services say 10k and 20k? are there any nasty ones to look out for, like cambelt etc?
Won't be buying quite yet, but does seem to be a very good alround car, when was the facelift I've read about? people seem to say the interior and engines get better etc?

well let me ad some comments here.
I bought a 2.5 boxster just when they were introduced. I now have 325.000 km (200.000 miles) on the clock. So far I only exchanged the starter and the fuel pump. The car never let me down. I use it as my daily driver. And am planning to ad another 100.000 km on the clock. And then I'll take it to RUF to have a transplant.
Good luck with your car, believe me its the best I have ever owned.
