The oil level gauage on my 993 only ever worked for a couple of weeks after I bought it. Rather than book it in and take it back to the dealer are there any basic checks I can perform? I understand it's a common problem. Basically the needle on the gauge does not move at all.

Thanks for any help.

make sure you do have enough oil in...seriously....they only work well when the oil is warm and at idle or steady rpm on a level...Unlike the guage in a 3.2 or SC which works all the time.

If you satisfy the above criteria,,, take off the offside rear wheel arch and you will find the oil tank,,,if it is not a dirty contact, bad earth (usual problem)...you could replace the sensor. Ifa none of that works it could be your guage...

The oil does have to be seriously warm before it will register....on a flat bit of ground and the engine idling..then check the dipstick to see what's what..the gauge should be the same as the d'stick.

Yep, oil level is OK. I check it religiously using the dipstick. The gauge just will not move at any time. For the few weeks it was working I used to come back from a drive, park up and let the car idle and it would show the correct reading.

I'll check the contacts at the sender first.

Cheers
