My '81 930 starts to miss and blow black smoke when it hits 3000-4000 RPM under load. Anyone got any ideas?

Ailing turbochargers can exhibit this. Does it smoke at idle when warm too?

Turbos would be blue smoke... black smoke sounds like overfuelling from the miss... could be wrong, but I'd get normal misfire checks done first (can be many things from dodgy plugs, leads, low voltage sensors, timing, you name it).

Sure its not a diesel
No seriously domsters right if it were the turbos you would be getting blue smoke.Black smoke is mormally overfueling or misfiring.

check for sparking on the ignition leads, you will see and hear sparks, that can cause misfires and smoke.

Turned out to be the rear fuel pump and a bad ignition lead. Everybody's happy now, including the Environmental Protection Agency.
