So, I collected my new 718 in November.

While giving me my keys etc during the handover my salesman says "these are your tracker fobs, you'll only need them if you pay for the VTS service, it costs a few hundred pounds".

I never had fobs with my previous Porsche (new in 2014 981), didn't intend to pay for the tracker service so promptly left them at home.

Subsequently discovered my OPC hadn't registered my car for the free Connect App before delivery. When I returned the car for it to be 'activated' the service guy says "Where are your fobs? We need them to activate the Connect App service". They promptly activated two new fobs, asking me to return my originals when I was next passing. Again, I thought nothing of the fobs as I've not subscribed to any tracker service.

Passing my OPC today so dropped off the unused fobs. Service lady nearly had a heart attack when she saw I kept the 'activated' ones in my glove box. Advised to keep one on me (but not attached to my key) and store the spare one at home.

Am I missing something??? Surely these fobs are redundant as I don't pay for the tracker service or should I do as advised???

You are correct. You only need the fobs with you if you have registered for the tracker.

If your fobs are at home the app still tracks your car. Only need them if you pay Porsche/cobra tracking service.

Some clarification may be needed.

Porsche Car Connect (PCC) is the tracking system that incorporates 3 individual options; security; safety and remote services. Tracking and safety are subscription based services - 235/yr - and can get you an insurance discount. The fobs form part of the driver recognition system and must be used in accordance with the operating instructions. The system is provided/serviced by Vodafone Automotive. PCC has an App that communicates with your car. Using the PCC App 'remote services' you can check on-board functions and systems from your smartphone - fuel level/tyre pressures; find your car and fold in your mirrors (if option is fitted). By the way; you get a free period of remote services - you don't need to subscribe to safety or security - just register the App and the vehicle and you are away.....

Connect App - is another (different) phone based App/system that integrates with your PCM giving additional functionality - if you have PCM4.0 with Connect and Connect + (online services) you can use the suite of functions available within to enhance the abilities of the PCM - online nav/online poi/Google Earth etc.
You also get Apple Carplay.

The systems are different but the naming leads to much confusion......!!

Depending on your build date and spec. your PCM may be eligible for the latest update campaign also - incorporating the latest software levels and Nav Data (WG47) your centre will contact you - or check on the PCGB Campaign checker:
