not very technical but sure its not impossible to repair the gearbox !
perhaps a good specialist can help here - an OPC will charge a fortune.

I think the problem is porsche not supplying the parts, prefering to rip customers off for whole gearboxes instead. I'm sure someone will be along in a while with some factual comments. Anyone?

The problem lies more in the way gears are fitted to their respective shafts. The shaft is cooled to shrink it and the gears are heated to expand them. Once fitted like this they are very hard to seperate.

Speak to Steve at Jaz (Wembley), on 0208 903 1118. I was talking to him over the weekend and he told me that he`d finally got a source in, I think Germany, to re-manufacture the gearboxes which up until now have been impossible to source.

He may well have an exchange unit on the shelf.

Hope that helps.

Have a look at Stig's (CJ's) quest to find a Getrag box for his Ultima canam... www.ultima-canam.info

He mentions one or two of these dismantlers (the rest are those I keep pastable for posts like these!... not recommendations, just details, I'm afraid):

PS I'd say the price you've been quoted is pretty good. No harm ringing around for cheaper quotes tho', but I'm not sure you'll beat it easily.

in follow up to my previous problem with a gear box bearing in a 996 that porsche said required a new gear box (£6k) , im pleased to report that the excellent people at A1 gear boxs in st neots www.a1gearboxes.net where able to take it out, open it (porsche said it couldnt be opened) and replace the bearing , (and clutch while they were there ) and put it all back to gether for 1600 , which i thought was priity damn good . cheers steve !

Another independent that I have used and rate highly is PorsheWorx Engineering, 0207 9166 911 talk to Mario. He usually has exchange 996 boxes available and has a way of rebuilding them I believe.
Hope this helps.

I was at Wrightune in Wallingford last Friday, and they were in the process of taking out a 996 gearbox for rebuild to cure a bearing noise. Apparently he has a source for parts. If you are anywhere near there it might be worth giving them a call. (01491) 826911 or the web address is www.wrightune.co.uk
