This article in EVO did make me chuckle!
"See also, anyone thinking of speccing a hardcore Porsche without air con and a stereo. Such order-form bravado might make you feel like you love driving more than the next man in slender racing booties, but I can be pretty sure you’ll never feel one iota of difference in the car’s dynamic range because of the bits you left off. But you will feel hotter and more bored in traffic."
I'm sure it will resonate with others!

there's some logic in that but what people fail to realize is that with a lot of special editions the removal of the air conditioning in factored into the weight saving that makes them 'special'. An m3 csl is -100kg but in reality it's -85kg and iirc with the cayman r and others the removal of AC is actually making up a significant percentage of the weight removal"See also, anyone thinking of speccing a hardcore Porsche without air con and a stereo. Well if we're talking reality, in the big scheme of things 15kg is neither here nor there....And in the case of the CSL, the reduced weight is only one small part of what makes it so much better than a regular M3.
I'd suggest Evo's ramblings are more indicative of a shift in their demographic and a similar shift in those buying what are perceived as "hardcore" cars. Not once did I step out of my numerous 964 RS's (or indeed my 993RS) thinking "I wish that had aircon" or "that would have been so much better if I'd been able to listen to the radio...."
How times change

"Well if we're talking reality, in the big scheme of things 15kg is neither here nor there...."
Very true..... also never fails to amaze me about how people talk about losing a few kgs from heir cars (or bikes) but fail to see in the mirror the spare couple of stones or so hanging off their bones.....

I quit Evo after last years Car of the Year, firstly because I want to be able to actually be able to buy the winner, and secondly due to the lack of actual journalism. Magazines can survive if they are actually readable.
Me too. Only thing of interest by that stage (and well written) was Jethro's 996 updates.I have a standard shift 7.1RS and a paddle shift 991RS.
I love the paddle shift and will definitely order it on my 992RS when it eventually makes it appearance. Yes, I have A/c and radio as I do not trailer the car to the track every week. of course if you have the capacity to drive the cars at as professional level I expect you would have a very hardcore spec. I am just an ordinary driver who likes a few trackways a year..

Very true. The average person probably has a spare 20-30kg they don't need to carry about.Of course, there's also all the crap they carry about in the boot.

To clarify I no longer have a subscription, occasionally take up the 3 for a £1 offer but read this via the Twitter feed.
Too many new unobtainable cars and the migration of talent to other publications has taken its toll.
You'd think that as petrol heads that'd be appreciated, yet it was precisely that (and other irritations) that made me cancel my subscription some years ago.Too many new unobtainable cars and the migration of talent to other publications has taken its toll.

I complete agree with the above. I have a 4.0 and a 991 GT3 RS. Its a diffeent experinec in the paddle shift car but it is in no way inferior to the manual in the 4.0 - just different. The 4.0 was the best Porsche could do 5 years ago and with the 991 they have entered into a new era of technological enhancements. To reverse engineer that car with a manual gearbox is a compromise makes little sense to me. If you want that true manual exprience find a good 997 GT3 RS but spec the 991/2with the paddle shift. I would. I love the paddle shift and will definitely order it on my 992RS when it eventually makes it appearance. Not everyone wants to buy a used car though, some of us want a new one with a Spanish gearbox
As a road-only driver I personally hate PDK as it's far too computer game-y for me. If I raced or did track days however I'd spec PDK as it has advantages in being able to keep both hands on the wheel and provides super slick gear changes.

Not a chance mine is manual all the way. I don't get the massive want for automatics :-(I run 4 manual cars there are all amazing things, tweaked here and there to make each one a joy to drive.
I get automatics but still not in Porkers, the gearing imo is still way to long in a PDK porker.
Auto Ferrari's work quite well they have ultra short ratio's PDK in Pork = dull.
Drive a Ferrari and you are flipping up and down the short ratio box.

Strange, most manual Porsche Boxes are 6-speed - the PDK box is 7-speed - I would have thought that the gear are closer ratio and slightly lower in the PDK car...?I run 4 manual cars there are all amazing things, tweaked here and there to make each one a joy to drive.

Or is it not the case? I used to have a couple of 997 GT3's and the gearing was incredibly long... think 87mph in 2nd gear and so on. My Boxster Spyder has the 7-speed PDK and whilst it can also crack above the legal limit in 2nd I think it has shorter ratios then the 6-speed manual variant.
