so to speak....

innuendo aside, my navy blue cab hood is accumulating tiny white flecks, especially along the rim where it meets metal. Starting to look like someones rubbed the edges with a chalk board rubber. I thought at first it was wax residue from the car wash/wax solution but its now appearing all over the hood top as well. tenacious stuff, doesnt come out with a stiff brush, a good rub with the dyson, those disposable sticky gloves or sellotape.

the car is garaged and Ive checked the roofspace above for bees, birds or prank-prone children (though mine wouldnt dare)

so how hard can one brush a canvas hood before it frays and does anyone have any good hood cleaning tips that will help?

failing that, can one get a hood professionally cleaned, and if so by whom (in the south west)?

Rubber strips all over my 993 (around the rear window for example where it meets glass, or around engine lid where it meets metal) has stuff like this.

I tasted it (don't ask) and it's salt (i guess from the not so distant cold snap we had).

Seems to have crystalized where rubber meets glass/metal. Weird huh? I guess a bit of water with some salt in it ended up under the edge of the seal, and as the water evaporated the salt crystallized.

Could yours be the same?

Another possibility would be tree pollen.

OK. I'll bet other people will go bonkers at this suggestion.

To clean my convertible roof I use a pressure washer. It is stunningly, stunningly effective. Deals with bird shit, dust, grime, fluff - everything.

To assuage my guilt I clean and "seal" the roof with "AutoGlym Convertible Roof Kit" - which has a sort of ultra-detergent for cleaning and then a sticky gummy sealant spray that waterproofs it.

I do the latter very occasionally and pressure washer the roof whenever necessary.

a plethora of useful suggestions. Ive just been out in the surgery car park licking the roof - no really, I have - hopefully anyone watching will think better of consulting me today and leave me alone - an added bonus. have to say that it tastes just canvassy, not salty. the little bits are like flufy cotton fibres, lots of different sizes, could I suppose be pollen.

I will, with some fear and trepidation, try the jetwash but I'm trusting you Don cos it just dont feel right...

If you use the porsche screenwash it may well be that, leaves a nasty white residue on just about anythign it can.
