All things looking good. Pretty convinced that my next car is going to be a Box S.

So, what options are the ones to go for?

At the moment I'm thinking of

Sat Nav
Heated seats
Bose
wind deflector

anything else worth getting?

thanks all

If its not standard PSM is a must.

Given PSM is so good I would STRONGLY recommend PASM - should be wonderful.

Personally I like lovely GT3 Sport Design 18" wheels.

I have full leather. Its really nice. But I've seen cars without it - and they're fine inside too - spend your money on *functional* options first...then the "bling" (leather, wheels).

Ally gearknob is nice.

Standard stereo crap - but only get Bose if you are sound nut - the upgraded Porsche stereo gives you enough speakers given its a softtop IMO.

Litronic headlights - hmmmn. I got them on my last two - mainly for cosmetic reasons on my first (clear lenses) and then because I liked them on my second. Its good to be able to see where you're going at night!

You do NOT need a hardtop...unless it will be a daily driver in winter.

100% agree with Don for the GT3 Sport Design 18" wheels.

A good choice of wheels make or break a car, take some time looking at them, they are in my opinion way better than the most commonly chosen Turbo wheels.

Being a lazy sod, I now regret not getting cruise control (for lazy m'way driving) and automatic rain-sensing wipers. I also couldn't do without the onboard computer, since I don't like to fill up unless it's absolutely necessary.

Also, I've got a feeling that climate control isn't standard on the new model. This is a must in my opinion.

If I was buying now I'd probably be tempted to get a sports exhaust too. I love the sound of my car - just wish it was a little bit louder sometimes.

I think the 18" Carreras are the ones to go for imo!
Bose- yep
Leather- yep (full if you can)
A good colour!
Mini chrome pack is nice and just enough in my opinion.
Litronic- not essential but cool!
Heated seats- def' yes!
Air con- Yes!

I think that's about it.

Why do you need heated seats? Surely you can just turn up the air-con if it's cold.

Is full beam really so bad that you need litronics? And why ruin the ride & handling with 19" bling wheels? Cruise-control? Come on, how hard is it to rest your foot on the accelerator? Rain-sensing wipers, oh please, can you not lift your hand to move the stalk up a notch and turn them on yourself? The bean-counters must be laughing all the way to the bank!

Come on, is this pistonheads or nancyboys.com? Leather I can understand, sports steering wheel & sports exhaust yes, but the rest of it just seems to be a good way to pee away money. Even PASM I would have to question - what's wrong with old-fashioned suspension?

This is interesting. I've just put a deposit down on the Cayman S. Options list is likely to be similar to the Boxster.

Can someone explain exactly what PASM is/does?
Rain sensing wipers FFS! If you cannot either tell when its raining or manage to set an intermitent wiper then you relly shouldn't be driving.

SatNav - everyone I know who has it, never uses it. Looks very trick, but lets face it, I rarely get lost, and a £2.99 atlas has done me absolutely fine!

I had rain sensing wipers on my BM...they were great..especially when it's very light intermittent rain. Who wants to mess with wiper controls when theres driving to be done

PASM is an electronic damping control system - offers continuous adjustment of the force in each damper to ensures optimum ride quality. On the Boxster its part of the sprts suspension - the car rides 10 mm lower than with the standard suspension.

Sat Nav...probably not needed on the Cayman. Some cars need it for resale but would not think that's the case here.

Heated seats sound like a luxury but those winter mornings where it's sunny but cold, heated seats are a must! Put the roof down , heated seats on and go for a blast, awesome!!

I have to say, spec-ing up a Boxster is a pretty tough job, my Dads a Porsche newbie and I'm trying to guide him through it.

Its also near impossible to spec for someone else, I personally would be going for an S with every nifty toy I could have, but I'm being more conservative on his 'boggo' Boxster.

PCM+phone kit is a nice option, and I'd probably go for it, but at around 2k, I really think you've got to REALLY want it.

PASM, again, I'd go for it, but for most people I can't see that you'd notice not having it.

Good options are nicer wheels (I don't like the standard Boxster wheels, the S's are much much nicer, and the Carrera's are lovely.) and other usefull stuff like Xenons and wind deflector.

Anyone have any insight as to what are 'must have' options on a base Boxster?

assuming you are talking 987S rather than 986S...

climate
metallic
sound upgrade
wind deflector

in addition I would not buy without:

heated seats
19" (Porsche have an uncanny knack of making optional wheels so much nicer looking than std ones)
BOSE
sports seats
sports wheel

and desirable to me but not essential:

PASM
Litronic
sports exhaust to replace those pathetic std pipes (when they make one)

if someone else was paying:

PCM and phone
electric adaptive seats

(the sports exhaust I would have to retro-fit at some time anyway)

Andy - I was also referrng to the S not the 2.7

a 2.7 makes 19" very expensive so would put 18" as a must have

also the 6 spped/PASM package becomes an attractive option

It certainly looks like hes going to go for the S. He asked me about PASM, and I tried my best to recall what people on here said. I advised him no, I just don't think it'll be £1000 spent that he'd ever notice, as long as the standard car is as good as I've been reading, that'll be fine I think.

can he not get to a dealer and take an S for a spin? al;l their demo will be specced with PASM so he can play about with ti.

Its a good system that can adjust damping from softer than std to way more sporty. Also slight visual improvement as it drops the ratker large wheel gaps by 10mm. I think I would spec it more for the comfort setting on motorway driving than sport setting on B roads.

but if he is not a sporty driver and would never press the sport button it is probably not worth it

No demo with PASM no, I asked. They had one but its on loan apparently.

Thanks for the thoughts again, I think its probably a wasted option for him myself as I'm presuming the standard set up is pretty damn good (better than a TT at least!).

Funny enough, he used to own an S3. Lovely car, such a superior car to the TT he replaced it with, TT never felt the same as that S3, I was always surprised just how different they felt considering they were the same car and the S3 had slightly less power.
