Negotiating 991.2 Carrera S with dealers
Discussion
I am struggling to find any information about typical discounts and negotiating with dealers in the UK. I'm considering buying a 991.2 Carrera S. I found some information about the US - it seems buyers can get a 3-8% discount but I'm not sure how comparable this is to the UK. I approached a dealer recently and he claims that none of the Porsche dealers will offer any discounts on a new Carrera S. This wasn't a local dealer. I asked him why I should buy via him instead of a local dealer in London and he didn't have much to say. Pretty confusing...
If anyone has recently experience buying a new Carrera or heard about others, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Supply/demand dynamics are very different in the U.K. from the US...dealers run a very different model with less inventory and can generally sell every car they get allocated at full list price. From what I understand US dealers will have a significant inventory of new cars most U.K. OPC's will have the cars that they have on view in the showroom (showroom stock) and generally that's it. They generally won't sell those unless another is due in to replace it as they have to have a 911 on the showroom floor.
I'd say to get a discount you need to find an OPC with a build slot in the next few months as they will have to take that car into stock if they don't sell it which generally they don't like doing. Taking finance should get you some kind of deal on a car.
I saw your thread asking about sales contacts...I work in London and live just outside. The OPC I use is about an hour from London (and really rate their quality of service) won't do deals on 911's...they just don't get that many through a month...I think they have maybe 4 build slots a month for Carrera/S.

Thanks Cheib.
I had a few follow-up questions for you:
1. I am indeed planning to get financing (PCP probably). What's decent discount if I do get financing through a dealer? 2-4%?
2. What the OPC you use?
3. Somewhat basic question - why would an OPC with a build slot coming up soon would be willing to give a discount?
4. Does getting optional item influence the likelihood of a discount? For example, if I was getting 10-15k worth of optional items.

I managed to get a £1k discount on a GTS specced to order. You won't find much out there after talking to numerous dealers. This generally is what keeps the 911 residuals high from what I can see.
They seem to sell all they can get at the moment. If the economy slows, you will prob have more of a chance.

Thanks. Out of curiosity, why would this keep residual value higher? Shouldn't the residual value have more to do with the market value and car usage / condition? If I get a discount that just means I get a better than market deal. Am I missing something here?zer0_0ne said:

If new cars are sold at list it keeps used prices higher because if new cars were cheaper (discounted) it would naturally have an adverse effect on residuals. The UK allocation of all 911 models seems to be lower than normal - maybe due to our market being less profitable due to weak GBP against a strong EURO. With OPC's able to sell all they are allocated you will be very lucky to get anything other than a token discount.

Interesting point. I wonder when the prices in GBP will go up given that the exchange rate is sliding downwards...zer0_0ne said:

Regarding 3) OPC's have build slots that they are given by the factory. If they don't sell them to a customer before that car goes into build they have to build that car as a stock car for themselves. Ties up money (dealers finance their stock) so reduces their margin. Depending on the OPC some will do anything to avoid it others have got bigger balls and will spec it in a desirable/high spec knowing that will likely attract a customer. Speccing £10k of options on a 911 is I would say fairly standard so I don't think that's going to get you much attention when it comes to discounts I'm affraid. And I don't think as has been described above you can expect more than £1k or £2k.
PM if you want an OPC recommendation.

Managed to get £4,000 off a new factory Carrera which equated to the options for nothing.
What was your tactic to get a discount?Dont be afraid to walk away from a deal. They will come back to you if you make it very clear you have a spec and will put a deposit down if the deal is right.
I think we were lucky though

Spoke to about 7 dealers - mostly ones myself or my wife had bought new or used cars from. Generally about 1-2k was the limit, but found one newish dealer keen for the business with a slot available.

Thanks edo! Can you explain a bit how the available slots affect discounts?Dont be afraid to walk away from a deal. They will come back to you if you make it very clear you have a spec and will put a deposit down if the deal is right.
