Have seen a nice looking 968 Tiptronic in an advert, then read reviews of the tiptronic gearbox not being very good.
Is it bad enough to put you off an otherwise good condition car ?
Is 95,000 miles a lot for around £11.5k
(You probably now all know which one I am interested in)

Yip, you'd have to pay me to have a 968 tip, ok i dont like tips anyway, but on the 968 its not a great box & spoils a decent car IMHO.
the tiptronic box does make the 968 comparatively pedestrian compared to the manual (look at 0-60 times, about 6secs for manual, about 7.5 for tip) but then it has other advantages. its bad enough to put me off, but then I live in the country and I love changing gear. In a city a manual box might well be a pain in the a**e. decide what are you looking for in your car.
if I was spending my days hooning round little twisty back roads I'd avoid the tip like the plague. however, as a town car or a long distance cruiser it might be perfect.
remember also that even a 0-60 time of 7+ secs is in the same ballpark as earlier 944s, and still way ahead of the majority of daily drivers.
about 95K is perfectly acceptable and normal for a 10-12 yr old car and £11.5K is about the right ballpark for an ok example from a dealer, or a really good example privately (expect to pay 13-14K+ for a manual in really top notch condition)

I have a manual, and wouldn't consider a Tip. The clutch is a bit heavy, but this is a sports car not a limo. The car doesn't need a 6-speed gearbox, but why not. You could buy a perfectly decent manual for the price you quote, privately, and this would be safe if you have the car inspected.
OK having owned a 968 tip I can at least speak with some authority on the subject rather than the normal, it's an auto therefore rubbish!
Forget about 0-60 times, the tip will keep up with any manual 968 on an A road if you keep it between 2nd and 3rd gear. In town they are great used in tip mode, but be warned that if you have it in auto it is a bit pedestrian.
Have now had two manual 993's and there are times in heavy traffic I was that I had a tip again!

Agreed! I have a 968 Manual but have driven a couple of tips.
On the few occasions I take it to work in Central London - a trip of only 12 miles in a mere 70 minutes at rush hour - my left leg is begging me to get an auto. On the open road, it's a different matter.
The 0-60 times are poor for the tip BUT that is down to the standing start (which the tip is poor at). 30-100 times are, unless you are a good driver, at least comparable if not better.

(OK so it was cheap and a possible basis for an RS rep...)... the Tiptronic 968 is the worst Porsche I have ever driven. The Tiptronic takes the edge off whatever performance the standard 968 may (or may not) have.
