964 Turbo or 993something
Discussion
I'm not sure where to go with this... I love the look of the 964 and have always hankered after a turbo. I've done plenty of reading about stuff the last week or so and
My budget is up to £50k so I know I have plenty of options in the 964, 993 and 996 range and would love some suggestions...
I don't really want a 996 to be honest.
What are the residuals like on a 964 turbo... if I buy a A1 condition car for what about £30-£35k (correct em if I am wrong), what do we think this will be worth in a couple of years.
For running costs would I be better with a 964RS or a 993RS or a 993 Turbo or a 964 Turbo... From a reliabilty point of view is there one which stands out from the rest??
Can anyone recommend someone to help me source a car, or help me in my quest.

Welcome aboard Tom!! (he's a fellow E30 M3 appreciator, we've done a track day or 2).
My advice is biased, so I suggest a 993 RS, possibly with a modified angine.
However, I know Tom was after something he could cross Europe in, so a Clubsport wouldn't be on. A Comfort would be OK though.
He actually prefers the shape of the 964. And before anyone rules out a 964 RS on the grounds that is has rock hard suspension, you should see Tom's every day car......a rock hard caged and de-carpeted E30 M3, basically a race car. This dude is hardcore.
I wouldn't rule out a 993 Turbo or 964 Turbo either. Perhaps some London based PHers could take him for a spin?

Hello Tom,
If you prefer the look of the 964 Turbo and don't mind the harder ride, then by all means go for the 964 Turbo (965).
I'm sure Domster will enthuse about this car.
The engine is a derrivative/evolution of the earlier 930- it's incredibly tough. It IS very laggy, but if this doesn't bother you so much- it's a great buy.
I think a 50 K budget is a bit low for a 993 RS, but it will cover a LHD example.
I myself own a 993 TT, and it suits me right down to the ground. I'm not a habitual track user, and it serves as a bit of a GT tourer too, with very little perceptable lag. I would reccommend it to anyone.

John is correct, if anything I would choose LHD over RHD.. to be honest I think that a hefty premium for RHD is wrong especially when you consider that these cars (correct me if I am wrong) like my E30-M3 were designed LHD and sometimes can be compromised as a RHD derivative - pedal offset being a classic.
Anyway not knocking RHD... just would choose LHD myself.
so is the turbo engine in a 964 (assuming I buy a goodun) as reliable/bomb proof as the engine in a 993?
Thanks

LHD rules
I won't buy RHD air-cooled.
993TT has two small turbos and hydraulic tappets. 964 turbo needs valve clearances adjusted every 12k miles i believe.
Also, 993TT is 12k mile service intervals, 965 (964 turbo) is 6k mile service intervals.
I know a few people who have had 965's and say they are wonderful, but money pits. Don't know anyone that says that about the 993TT.

You haven't mentioned if you intend to do much track work. If so Johnny's suggestion of a 993RS would probably make most sense. Added benefit is that they probably won't lose much value, and may eventually appreciate.
Wrt the 964 or 993 turbo choice, bear in mind that the former is RWD compared to the 4WD of the 993. This latter is not necessarily good news for track purposes - I recall reading on Rennlist forums that the front diff tends to get munched with too much track work. Having said that, in "normal" road conditions I find my 993tt very useable even in the wet and it gets the power down a treat. I only tried a 964 turbo briefly in the dry, but am not sure that I'd be too confident pushing that rather laggy oomph in the wet!
For tuneability, I'd say the 993tt has the advantage. Though, as you can see from ultraviolent's thread on his 964 turbo, the 964 is said to have a beefier bottom end, the control system (CIS I think) does not seem to be easily uprated without junking it. The 993tt, being the more modern car, can be uprated with bolt on kits such as the turbo/chip replacement plus oil cooler package from Carnewal to give 450 bhp. Going further than this is also possible with hybrid turbos, cam/exhaust changes and remapping, though that really is a slippery slope!
Nice choice to have to make.

Sorry Tom, but again my advice is biased towards a 964 Turbo.
I always loved the shape of the 964 and my budget was not big enough for a 993. I would say you will pay about 10k more for a good 993 Turbo which is alot considering the performance is similar.
Your budget of 30-35k is more than enough, to be honest this will get you a nice 964 3.6 derivative.
Also my previous car was an E30 M3 (cecotto). I always found it to be slugish off the line, bit like the Turbo but when it gets going you will have a smile from ear to ear.
Hope this helps

I don't think I am looking to track it to be honest..., maybe the odd trip out just to say I've done it but not hard core like I do with my current E30M3 (which I may keep - is more a question of space than finances)
But this car needs ear plugs on the motorway... so I don't think taking the girlfriend to Italy in it is really a goer (I'd love it mind)
Anyway.. enough about my white shed, which the more I think about it I can't possibly sell. No I want a 911 to take out on a sunny day, do a touring holiday in and polish in the evening when I question why I work so hard compared to some of my mates.
I've loved the 964 since a kid, thourh I prefer the RSR typre spoilers I think. Am not such a fan of the 993 Turbo shape, but love the 993RS shape... but stripped out is to loud for this venture I fear.

Yeah, if you watch bad boys you will have to get a 965 3.6 turbo. Only made for a year, but boy they're a catch!
To answer your question, i've had a C4S and now drive a C2 everyday, but time rolls on, and a 993TT has always been my dream. Now i can afford one, i think i owe it to myself.

I know Tom likes the big "double decker" clubsport style rear wings on the 964, can you get these for the 964 Turbo? Do you have to put a different front splitter on if you do this to balance things up?
Tom, I think that if you can keep the M3 for track days then you should. It owes you alot of money.
Then buy a 964 Turbo AS WELL and pimp it with the big wings and some light tuning work, nothing expensive. I would get it looking and handling right.
