Factory shutdown for 6 months??? Why?

So I am reading that there will be a factory shutdown from April 2018 to September 2018 is this true ? Why? Is it retooling for 992? It does not normally take that long! I take it that cayman/boxster S will still be built at Osnabruck.Is it not financial suicide to be shut for so long?
Short term values of used 911 will obviously increase as demand increases as new sales dry up!

They can say that they have reduced the factory emissions by 50%.

I cannot believe this is true. They produce more than 1000 cars per week at Stuttgart So a shutdown as described would lead to lost production of about 20,000 units. That would ha ve a disastrous effect on cash flow. Cannot see this happening.

PS just picked up from another thread that production issue is related to particulate filters. As these are only fitted to diesel engines, 911 and Boxster and Cayman should continue ?

I had a 1980 911 with emissions reduction on it. It was basically a chuffing great air pump that diluted exhaust gases with lots of air. Still the same crap coming out the exhaust, just mixed with air. Cheating emissions testing is nothing new.

Confirmed this today with OPC. April to Sept. I was expecting a Cayenne in June but have been told no allocation before shutdown and everyone is being pushed back so my June build slot could become a Nov/Dec build slot.

April - September shut down confirmed here too. Should be great for residuals on 991.2, particularly rarer models, turbo S. targa 4S etc...

Not at all, air pump served to ensure complete combustion, in the days of carbs and crude mechanical fuel injection unburnt fuel commonly left the tailpipe which is why the odour of petrol was so common.

Porsche build in several locations, if they're shutting down one production line it doesn't mean they're shutting down all production lines. I think anyone with an order should talk to their sales assistant and ask for clarification on their order rather than assume a shutdown will effect them.

Strange, the conversation I had yesterday was that the wouldn't have any new cars coming through at all during the shutdown. It could be BS but its in their interest to get me into a car ASAP as they have agreed to buy back my current car for what I paid for it so the longer I'm in it the more it costs them.

Amazing they’ll pay you back what you paid for your old car - what is it / how old is it ?

If it's just the Stuttgart factory shutting down which builds predominantly 911 then with the 992 perhaps released at the Geneva motor show in March then sales of 991.2 would come to halt as customers await new model so perhaps not such a big loss in production as numbers always drop off in the year of release of a new model. Production ramped up of the 2019 MY 992 in September to make up for losses?
