I’ve been offered what I believe is a “g” reg 911, so I presume a 964.
It has been outside, uncovered for approximately 2 years.
Last time it was taken for an mot it was in need of a heat exchanger, which was not replaced and the car then sat unused.
I am going to look at it next week so will get the reg to do a bit of an old mot search, the price is £15k. At this sort of money do I buy it regardless or is it worth paying for a professional to compile a report. I do intend to keep it long term if it is viable.
All opinions welcome,
Steve.

First thoughts: look really hard for signs of rust.

A car of that age left outside could be a complete rot-box.

There are certain cars where a "report" is worth only as much as the paper it's printed on, and with older, possibly neglected cars such as this may be, is generally the case.

You will receive a list of faults as long as your arm, but most of which will be pretty obvious if you take a not necessarily very close look.

And you are likely to back out of buying this car.

Some cars are for the brave and knowledgeable, for those who know that a problem that would be quoted as needing 5k to fix can be sorted (properly) for £500 with a mix of getting one's hands dirty, obtaining some parts from alternative sources, servicing/repairing rather than replacing others, that sort of thing.

Just chucking a chequebook at fixing "bargain" cars practically always results in a hideously expensive mistake.

Just be sure what sort of person you are before committing, fixing Porsches can be a very expensive pastime indeed.

Luke.

£15k for a 964? I'll take it if you don't.

£15k for a car, left outside with no MOT for 2 years. Only in Porsche world.

The type of offer that’ll bankrupt a person.

If it’s a 2WD coupe manual in a decent colour yep.

If it’s a convertible with the Tip gearbox and pink don’t.

My one was left under a car cover out side off the road for six years,

Really solid underneath and apart from a couple of spots of rust pretty good on top, the cover kept the worst of the elements at bay.

It probably helped that it had been restored 15 years ago with new wings, rubbers etc.

Go for it, cheap enough to take a chance on and it would break for that money, may even have the G50 box.

Clearly depends on condition as always. Also what you want to do and how much cash you have. If it needs rust doing, paint, gearbox, engine, exhaust, brakes, interior you'll need a mahoosive amount of cash and the appetite for a long project. If it's in good condition, you'll just need a lot of cash!

So,
It turns out that It is a 1979 911 sc widebody, 74K miles.
I will post a couple of pics but it is looking rather sorry for itself....
Rust bubbles showing at the bottom of the rear screen and starting around the headlamps.

Have you seen Car SOS? They featured a 911 SC Cabriolet as one of their projects....the car looked fine until you put it up on the ramp and it almost snapped in 2. Take your torch with you when you go to look at it and be wary of liberally applied rust proofing that might hide something more sinister unwittingly.
