I'm sure that this has been asked before but I've tried searching and can't find what the differences are between a 996 TT and GT2?

Also, does the GT2 have rear seats and if not, is it possible to have them fitted?

Finally, I'm sure I saw a thread last week about someone who has a TT but it looks like a GT2. Any idea where that thread has gone?

TT= 4 wheel drive 420-450 BHP traction control and 4x seats

GT2 = 2 wheel drive 465-480 BHP (Don't quote me) no traction control 2x seats, slighlty lower, and a bit lighter.

All but the very 1st few GT2's came with PCCB's as standard.

There's a few aftermarket companies that can give the GT2 look to a turbo, if you're willing to pay for it !!

TT for the road, GT2 for the Track IMHO

996T 420 or 450bhp (X50) 4wd, more electronic aids than the starship enterprise.

Gt2 is- (in very basic terms) an X50 lump with a few more horses thrown in a GT3, i.e only 2wd & no driver aids bar yr right foot.

A TT is a small Audi, loved by women & those who wear chunky rimmed glasses & polo neck jumpers

the difference is more in the owners. gt2's are owned by studly fellows that continually find themselves having to beat back the nubile young women who flock at their feet. gt2 owners are admired around the world as the bravest of the brave; they are the living legends that history will talk about in the same way as hercules and alexander the great.

but gt2 ownership is not about going out and simply buying one. when a gt2 is in need of a suitable 'dominus' you get the calling... then it is time for elevation, enlightenment and ownership.

if you have not heard the whispers in your head in the day, and the voices coming from the shadows at night, then you must wait; go to your nearest opc and learn the ways of the force with a turbo, young jedi

The nice thing about both cars, if you want more donkeys, both are very tuneable for a few £k to 10s of £k.

For example, I've taken my std. 420bhp 2001 996TT (TT - twin turbo) to 525bhp for @ £4k - Quicker than a std GT with all the seats, 4WD and safety bits.

in all seriousness glenn summed it up best. the tt is a road car and the gt2 is a track car, if for no other reason the gt2 sits 20mm lower than the tt. bascially is grounds everywhere. you have to plan a route carefully not to go over any road humps.

regarding roshambos comments: the widowmaker stuff now makes sense having been on my driver training day. problem is you build up so much speed so rapidly that you do not actually know how fast you are going, and you end up entering corners far too fast, slam on the brakes too late and end up playing hide and seek with the wildlife in the nearest hedgerow. the tt although basically just as quick will less likely leave you in the same mess as it has 4wd and psm.

the gt2 encourages balance and smoothness in your driving technique, whereas the turbo will be more forgiving.

Thanks for all the advise guys. Sounds like the TT is going to be the one for me but I find the look of the TT too conservative.

Do you know of anyone that has a TT with a GT2 body kit? What do you think of it?

Trust me, you can still visit the wildlife just as fast in a tt as in a GT2. If your going too fast - your going too fast.

Yeah, there was a guy on here the other day with a 996 Turbo with GT2 body kit (plus other upgrades)....can't remember his name though. Very nice idea IMHO. Would be a great second hand buy.

I agree the GT2 looks more agressive than the Turbo. Its the front & rear bumpers & the lower stance that does it. All those can be addressed. I looked into fitting a GT2 front bumper & the cost was something like £5k fitted/painted !! so quickly forgot that idea. Sure you can find somewhere thats cheaper though if you hunt around. Places that do post 2001 996 facelifts for pre 2001 cars is a good bet. I would be very interested if you found somewhere reasonable that does this.....my Turbo looks a little too much like a 4S for my liking

Hi All

I'm the guy who has got a TT with a GT2 body kit (check my profile). I bought the car with the kit already on it. It appears to have been done by GWR in Milton Keynes(01908 227 586) and cost around 7K.

You get the best of both worlds this way. Especially if you tune the car as well !! Mine has 540 BHP, sports exhaust, uprated suspension and breaks. Thankfully the previous owner paid for it !

Mine started life as a std. 420 bhp 996 TT, so not an x50. I haven’t had it RR’d yet. It’s a speculated 525. That’s why I used the around/at sign - @525. It could be 490 – 530 for all I know.

It’s the DMS chipping format. Interestingly I was on the MiniHoon over the last weekend with Rods & Daz. Daz’s TT is the x50 and Rods is a DMS @ 550bhp (he has some sports header pipes (@ +£2k, where mine are std) and he has slightly larger turbos – x50 ones I think – correct me Rods if I’m wrong – he’s running 1.3 bar boost and mine is 1.2 at best, typically I see 1.0 – 1.1 on the std. turbos, which are rated up to 1.6 bar constant use by the manufacturer interestingly enough! Porsche only run them at 0.8 bar to make them last longer I guess).

Had a few blasts against Rods, not a lot of difference between them really. His is a bit quicker.

As for GT 2 body kits for the std. Turbo, check out Design 911:
www.design911.co.uk/index.htm?Region=UK

They do: 996 GT2 LOOK AEROKIT - Complete front bumpers and rear spoilers giving the GT2 look for 996 TURBO and C2S, C4S £ 3795.00

Very nice car Jon! I'm looking to put the GT2 kit on mine in the near future too - when funds allow!

Yes, you are the guy that I was referring to - thanks for posting.

Looking at Jon's car, it looks like they have changed:
- front bumper
- rear bumper
- rear spoiler

Are there any other cosmetic differences between a TT and a GT2?

the best way to compare the 2 cars is side by side.
