got a mysterious intermittent metallic squeeking from somewhere underneath, thought at first it might be a bearing, as there appeared to be some play/heat on one hub.
But have popped off each wheel, (and where possible) adjusted bearing up, but still noisy.
Looked for stone trapped in pads/brake dust build-up but cant' detect any
nothing appears newly-shiny or loose around rubber bushes its in for inspection on Wednesday anyway, but I'd like to know what it is myself beforehand anyway

I've had a stone trapped in the rear brakes before. It worried me so much that I took the wheel off in the works car park before going home. I still didn't spot the stone.
It wasn't until I got it home that I found the stone trapped between the backplate and the rear disk/drum rotor. You can only see them usually if you look upwards from underneath the rotor.
It could be a multitude of things though.
Is the noise only present when you are in motion?
Is it a continuous noise in volume and pitch?
Can you identify which end of the car it's coming from? - One way to do this is to drive an open road (no sound reflections from walls) and listen in turn with each of the windows open.

It comes and go's (mostly comes though)
I never have a lot of trouble with this car, and i'd be surprised to find a worn suspension part on it, hence the search for stones as its parked on a gravel drive overnight.
first thought was a bearing but then its not a permananent squeel, or on turning only grr....

Took it to Tuthills Banbury, who set about changing f/o/s bearing after a listen to spinning wheel.
But ended up removing front leg all together as my feeble attempt at tightening up the squeeking bearing by a quarter of a turn, had caused the outer bearing to break up, and begun to eat the stub, its supposed to spin on, which Franciss himself pointed out,
"that if it had actually passed an MOT, it would have heated up the axle and could 've just sheared off"
anyway wallet a bit lighter now, but mended

Good news that it's found and sorted.
Could have been a nasty one that. I'm quite surprised that the noise was intermittent if that was the fault. It's always a good plan to figure out what any unusual noise is though.
I think this is one of my main frustrations with the government edging toward legally approved auto repairs. By the time you've figured out what the problem is, it's usually just as easy to fix it there and then.
If I know I'm not allowed to fix it, am I going to be quite so bothered about finding out what the problem is?
