I think the Porsche fraternity, must be asleep today judging by response to your question,
Late on a saturady afternoon is hardly the busiest time tho is it...
Maybe matey means the little grill covering the auto temp sensor thingy for the heater- think 3.2s had that set up anyway.
As people have said, it's the sensor for the electronic temperature control.
It's connected to the rotary dial by the handbrake that controls the heater for cabin air.
The cars used to have a lever that directly opened and closed the flap boxes on the heat exchanger. If you take the box by the handbrake apart, you'll find a motor that drives the old stump of a lever. The temperature setting on the dial and thermometer control the motor.
The cold air is entirely separate and mechanical only.
There is a separate motor that drives the inlet port that you're asking about. It specifically sucks air in and over the temperature sensor. It commonly packs in and then the heater controls for the cabin don't work properly.
If you can hear/feel the small ammount of suction, yours is working fine. (If you're a smoker, blow smoke past it - otherwise use a recently extingished match)
Edited to add>>
The hot side of the cabin air system, is probably the most complicated I have ever witnessed in any vehicle. Loads of people complain about it, but if it works correctly, it's brilliant.
I've never before had a car that I can jump in with misted/frosty windows, and have a clear windscreen in under a minute and a half.
