Hi
I'm currently in the process of selling my Marcos (second car). I'm also buying a first house. This means I can't be doing with throwing miney at a car. I've been umming and aaring about the choice of my next and only car (for everyday use) for months. It's been Elise S2, another Marcos, Boxster, another Elan turbo, 964 and now 968. Saw one today at Goodwood and although I love the 964 to bits, it was a refreshing change to see this car. I'd be after a Cab. What are they like to run? I'm sort of down now to this and a Lotus Elan S2 (had an SE before and it was a decent car). The thing about both of these cars is that they are special in that you don't see them too often (compared to an Elise or day I say a 911). I'm sure they are worlds apart in driving experience. Can somebody give me an insight into ownership of this model? I'm expecting to pay about 12K for a decent Cab, is that realistic? I assume that an inspection is a good idea too.

I don't think you'll get a decent 964 Cab in a sensible colour for £12K (but I could be wrong). I suggest you contact Peter Morgan here [url]www.petermorgan.org.uk[/url] and buy one of his excellent buyer's guides for this model. I also suggest that you get him to inspect any car you are considering buying, he's looked at a 964 for me this week and I am very impressed with his report.

Unless I read it wrong, I think he is talking about a 968 cab. If it is a 968 you want, then I'd say your figure is about right. I would definitely get any 968 inspected.

Aye, I meant 968 - sorry, it reads funny. Alcohol + internet as well.
Is there a significant decrease in perfomance in the Cab due to the weight increase? What are servicing costs like for them - significantly less than the 964 it seems. Are the roofs on the cabs pretty leak free? Do they have rear seats?

I never knew that choosing a decent sportscar for everyday use would be quite so hard work - I keep flitting from one thing to the other. I can't do anything yet though until I've sold my Marcos - but it's pretty cool investigating the marques...

I've been told that there are a lot of old dogs out there, particularly with CSs as they are driven harder often. Does the same apply to the cab model?

I'm a big 3.2 Carrera fan myself but have been tempted by a 968 and I really can't blame you for wanting one as they are great cars - in fact better than a 911 in many ways especially when it comes to cornering speeds - they just haven't got the soul/heritage that a 911 has.

Having had a good look myself I reckon your £12k is about right but another couple of grand would definitely help.

As always with Porsches look for, as near as possible, perfect service history with long ownership periods and also buy on condition first and foremost.

Also, don't forget to give the roof a good check over - loads of money to replace!!

When you get it inspected, make sure the cam teeth are looked at.

Just agreed terms on a 1993,58,000 mile 968 Coupe, manual and with air con. One of the best looking cars I have seen paid £11750 for it.

bought a 968 manual cab about 6m ago. didnt get it inspected, but it did have full main dealer service hx and it had just had new pads, discs and clutch, also the timing chain had malfunctioned at 30k so it had had a new set of belts plus complete new tensioner set up. i therefore took a small risk and bought....

the reason being that I had spent a long long time looking. and this is the down side - took me 18months of searching, of which 12 months was very intensive. during that time I found 5, 3 of which sold immediatley, and befoer I got a look in.

so some comments:
a matter of taste but for me it is a stunningly beautiful car. 10/10 for pride of ownership

the roof is fine - very easy to operate, robust, and hasnt leaked yet, despite some hefty winter downpours.

performance in terms of acceleration is marginally down on the coupes I tried, but the joy of open top motoring (particularly beign able to hear the lovely engine note in all its glory) more than compensates and the handling is just like the coupe - I couldnt detect any scuttle

coming for a marcos you will almost certainly have to get a manual; the tip just isnt there in terms of raw fun (for me). but a manual cab is a very rare beast so you eed to be organised, ready to pounce, and lucky. If you need an inspection get someone primed and ready before you go to look or even better, take a small financial risk and take them with you if your initial telephone investigations seem promising.

I absolutely lve mine to bits. its a fabulous car. its not a 964 but its a more practical daily drive, more mechanically reliable, and still great great fun

oh and it does have (small) rear seats. the boot is pretty small but takes my briefcase, 2 schoolbags plus 2 sets games kit, 1 clarinet, and a quarter size cello (no really). packing the boot takes planning but it is possible
