I’m not having much luck with my 718 Cayman at the moment. This month alone I’ve scuffed an alloy (already refurbed and as good as new though!), had a kid throw a stone and chip my rear windscreen, and now my manual gearbox is shot.

I returned to my car today and noticed as soon as I got moving that that the gearbox felt off - it seems like there’s a problem with the linkage. Shifting into 1st, 3rd and 5th was almost limp and too soft and the gears weren’t clicking into place. The bottom row of gears are all totally fine, so I drove a 40 mile trip home using only 2nd, 4th and 6th gear. Once I got home, I discovered that the gearshift won’t go into reverse at all and now also won’t go into 1st, so I’m now trapped on my driveway unable to move.

Not what you’d expect on a three month old Porsche furious

Anyway, I called up Porsche Assistance and they were great - AA turned up within half an hour of calling! The guy got under the car and moved the gears by hand, so the gearbox definitely isn’t catching on anything but it IS making a worryingly loud noise whenever you shift gear. There was nothing the AA guy could do on the driveway.

It’s the weekend, so my local OPC is closed which means the car isn’t getting picked up by the recovery truck until Monday. The car is obviously still under warranty, and so I’ll be given a courtesy car.

I was just curious as to whether or not any of you have had similar problems with the gearbox and how long roughly your car was in for repair? Am I naive in hoping it’ll just be a couple days?

Also, what can I expect in terms of a courtesy car for last-minute recoveries like this where a courtesy car obviously hasn’t been booked in advance? My local OPC is Aberdeen, so if any of you have had a courtesy car from them then it would be great to hear what you were given!

I’ve not heard yet of any selector troubles with the 718 Cayman.

You will be given a car from Enterprise from their premium selection. This will usually be a BMW, Audi, Merc, Volvo or Jaguar.

Good to know, thanks. Enterprise don’t rent cars out to anyone under 25, and I’m only 20.. Do you think this will matter in the circumstances of a courtesy car rather than just simply hiring out a car?

I've never had anything other than a dealer car, for breakdowns and servicing. I expect that if a) they look to use Enterprise as there are no dealer cars and b) they are bound by the 25-yo rule, they will sort something out. I had a demonstrator for a couple of weeks in similar circumstances.

EDIT. Late to this party I see, after reading your other thread... A Fiesta is not a great alternative! Best option is likely to be getting the dealer to arrange the car, and not working on Enterprise to upgrade you. They can do cars at short notice - I had a car next day on a Monday after a Sunday breakdown.

hi,
iI Had the same problem as you have had after 15 days ownership. The A/C also didnt work. The car was 2 weeks in the Porsche centre as the parts needs to come from Germany, so I hope its shorter for you.
i also read you have a fiesta as replacement frown, i had a merc E class, still not a Porsche.

I'm wondering is its going to be a common issue in 718..

Goodluck!

Just heard back from my OPC - my gearbox problems were only because of a loose cable connection, thankfully! I’m so relieved it’s nothing serious.
