996 Oil warning
Discussion
Don't get tempted into topping up the oil every time you get fuel and the electronic gauge indicates the oil is a bit low. I too have seen the reading at the higher end of the gauge (usually in the morning with a cold engine) but then after an M40 blast and refuel, the gauge shows about 3 or 4 levels lower. As long as it's between the upper and lower levels it should be ok.
A consistent approach to taking the oil reading should really be used, ie read the manual and take the oil level (preferably using the dipstick which is more accurate than the electronic gauge) on a level surface with a warmed engine. I tend to do mine on a Sunday after washing and refueling the car for the coming week, with the car back in the garage warm from the drive to the petrol station.
I've heard talk of overfilling the oil contributing towards RMS problems - but cannot vouch for or verify this. Perhaps someone here can confirm it as just hear-say?
