I'm looking for an everyday bus so was considering a Cayenne S Diesel. Amazing engine and a great vehicle for transporting my 3 kids, the dog and mountain bikes.

But should I be put off buying a Diesel now? With Porsche no longer making Diesel cars and the future banning in cities etc., would I be insane to purchase a £60k vehicle that I'd be planning to keep for a couple of years. Will it be worth 50p in 12 months time....? Thoughts please.

Wifey bought a new Cayenne Plat Edition in Jan this year. The PCP deal was excellent. This is a run out model & the negative mood on diesels meant we got a great deal. Really pleased with it - such a massive step up from her Disco 4. IMO I think we are still a good few years away from diesels being banned/replaced etc. So much of our transport/haulage/logistics relies on diesel. Thats not going to change overnight.

I bought a diesel s last week after flip flopping for months. I convinced myself that the lack of a big diesel engine variant in the new model (thus far) would mean mine will still be sought after when I come to sell it, which I don't intend to anytime soon; it really is a super thing. Chieb's comments were a big influence on the decision. Cheers bud beer

Like how big petrol engined vehicles like S500, 540i, Range Rover Sport 5.0 etc held their value excellently when manufacturerers moved away from them to focus on diesels you mean?

My OPC told me last weekend they have plenty of demand for diesels at the moment. We have a 1yr old S Diesel which i love and just did a circuitous 17 hour drive to Switzerland in. Ate up the miles and was then more fun than it has the right to be on the Route Napoleon.

If demand for diesel cars drops off diese usage goes down so Diesel prices comes down. Which will then see people buy diesel cars because for lots of people they’re cheap to run. They can’t stop refining diesel so it has to go somewhere. The fact they are seemingly not going to make a diesel any time soon is especially good news for the S Diesel as it’s such an exceptional engine for the job.

If you're even remotely contemplating ditching it in 12 months time, it would be a pretty stupid purchase IMO. If you plan to drive into city centres/controlled zones every day, again a stupid purchase IMO.

But if you plan to keep it a while and occasionally enter controlled zones, what's the worst that can happen. Over 3 years perhaps Another £1k in charges for entering controlled zones. Perhaps it's worth £25k instead of £30k after 3 years? If you've got the balls to take a £30k+ loss over 3-4 years and dire mpg compared to an estate, you can probably stomach those additional losses smile

NB: I'm presuming the Government doesn't do something really punitive for fear of riots.

One thing I will say, it aint fun selling a big diesel engined car (albeit not an SUV) right now frown

Big fan of advanced, eu-6, Diesels for certain applications - low to mid-range delivery, economy, many even sound nice (apart from idle).

Wouldn't have one in a sports car, but for general road use, I actually prefer diesel to petrol or hybrid.

Would not swap my Cayenne SD Plate Edition for anything else.

Bags or torque, liveky V8 rumble and achieves on distance 38mpg!

Would struggle to achieve such a combination with a petrol/hybrid...

Totally agree. I looked at buying a Hybrid before buying the S Diesel.....they make sense for people that can buy them and get the tax relief or people that run lots of short journeys and can charge the battery.

For me though the Diesel was a much better proposition and I think it's nicer to drive.

It did drop for the overall journey but still mightily impressive.

I would certainly consider another diesel Cayenne.

In fact I'm in the process of selling my old one to buy a newer one!
