919 at the ring

Motoring jounro's were discussing this in Twitter yesterday....seems like the rumour is a frankly unbelievable 5 min 15 secs...and if you based it on how quick its been vs GT3 R at other tracks it could in theory go below 5 mins.
It appears very likely that it will at least hit 5m 5s, but if I were to put money on it I reckon it may dip below 5 mins.Steve Rance said:

Insane step up from Belloff's magic 6:11 lap
I was given to believe that Beloff’s lap included the GP circuit. Still a very quick lap for the 919. I’ve heard it’s a minute quicker than the 2 RS straight out of the box LaurasOtherHalf said:

It was 1983, the year that the new GP circuit was under construction. It's the only year that just the Nordschleife was used for major international races.

Ah. Understood. Well yes, the 919 is indeed very fast then, but for me the Bellof lap was and will alway be THE lap of the Nordshleife. For comparison, Christian Danner was fastest in the F2 race that year with a 6:28 lap, and Tom Walkinshaw's XJS was fastest in the ETCC race with 7:56.

As impressive as this 919 is, it has been built specifically as a record breaker and not restricted by any racing regs. Bellof on the other hand if I recall was qualifying his 956 - a regular racing car subject to Group C regulations. That's why it will always be THE lap.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 956 had a manual box, with PDK introduced in the 962. All the more impressive if I'm right. Bellof was/still is an absolute legend.
No doubts about that at all. Bellof’s lap is the stuff of legend for many reasons as previously listed.
For me though the interesting bit is the showcasing of the engineering and the advances that have been made in recent times. Although to be fair whoever the driver is he’s got some balls.

Even if they ran the regular 919 Hybrid with fuel flow restrictions and no active aero, it would still be able to lap significantly quicker than the 956. GT3 cars are now about Group C-fast, because tyres have come a very long way in 25+ years. As impressive as this 919 is, it has been built specifically as a record breaker and not restricted by any racing regs.
