New GT2 owner says thanks
Discussion
Just wanted to say thanks for the great help and advice this site contains, I have just sold a Carrera 4 and after much debating have plumped for a GT2 ( much debating being about 30 secs after first driving it I had made my mind up!)
The article about trackday insurance was great as I have followed everyone's advice and rang Bickley Insurance after finally tracking the number down as they dont have a website(tel for ref is 0208 773 8123)and they were great. Swapped my GT2 and workday S Class Merc and saved 700 quid and can get completely fully comp trackday insurance for £150 per day which I think for a car that has just cost me 70k is a complete no brainer.
I also read with great interest the articles on driver instruction as this is exactly what I wanted to do and the main reason I went for a GT2 rather than something with traction and stability etc.
I was really nervous when I picked the car up on Weds as it was raining hard and had 1.5 hrs of country lanes to contend with but in reality it was fine. Woke up the next morning thinking that had I done the right thing as it was so bloody quick but hey 4 days later and approx 550 miles covered and I absolutely love it.
I am off to Castle Combe on the 9th May and have approx 7 more trackdays booked so I really hope to meet up with some of you in the future and once again thanks for all the great advice contained within this site.

Congrats, Mike, awesome piece of kit.
Check out Chris Harris's comments in Autocar about his preferred choice of rubber since he feels this transforms the handling of the car from it's Mk1 'widowmaker' stature to something more akin to the later cars which are reputedly more resolved.
Get it along to V-Max at Bruntingthorpe and witness the potential of your car. Guy R has one with a RUF supplied 'Nardo spec' engine which produces 630bhp.
It is the ultimate car in the universe and the standard bearer for uber schnellenkraus.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys
Have trawled the Autocar website for the article on tyres but no joy, am I being completely thick and I should be looking on the foorum somewhere?? Please help.
What generally is the main issue with the MK1 getting such a bad rep as i am either the slowest driver in the world..er no the best driver in the world...er no or am just nowhere near the limit of what the car can do on normal roads but I have been getting used to it for 5 hrs today and abso thrashing it senseless and it feels totally planted, granted on bumpy crap surfaces its all over the place but on smooth A or B roads it is simply awesome with the ability to power out of corners like my Carrera 4.

Welcome to the site.
Great looking piccy in your profile.
I think Guy and Henry who regularly use their GT2s on trackdays use the Pirelli P Zero Rosso. You may like to consider swapping your front brake discs to steel GT3 cup discs and corresponding pads if you are going to trackday the car enthusiastically.

Sounds like Camtune have put the GT3 steel discs in anyway (Porsche fit PCCB to all GT2, the exception are a few of the very first cars where they fitted the smaller calipers and discs of the 996 turbo). The GT3 Cup discs are treated so they take longer to crack up. I don't think there will be any difference in brake feel when driving.

Good so hopefully they'll be OK, one prob I had with my 968 was boiling the brake fluid on track days, do you know if the GT2 is likely to have the same problem or do they use better fluid as standard. Also was looking at the spoiler adjustment earlier but being completely unmechanical couldn't work it out, does anyone have an experience of adjusting it? I was thinking of sticking it to max downforce for my first trackday on the basis that I don't mind losing a bit on the straights but would welcome as much grip in high speed corners as poss?
Nice car Mike, congratulations!!
The tyre article that Chris Harris writes is in the May 2005 issue of GT Purely Porsche. To quote him:
"If Porsche had launched the 996 GT2 on Pirelli P-Zero Corsas, there can be no doubt that the press reception would have been far more positive than the drubbing it received back in 2001".
"The P-Zero Corsa system is the tyre developed for the GT3 RS and Ferrari 360 CS. It's a soft compound, but still a comprehensively grooved tyre that's intended for track day use but with the same wet weather grip as a basic P-Zero Rosso. Now Porsche is unusually fussy about OE fitments as we all know, but these are pukka items and have the requisite "N" nukmber to prove as much."
He goes on to say that they make the correct size for the GT2 and the tyre improves steering, understeer and breakaway charactaristics without touching the suspension.
But make sure you buy Corsas not the standard Rossos.

thanks for the info, Guy do you have any comment or advice regarding the spoiler adjustment I mentioned earlier, whats also been your impression of the car on track? Every mag article seems to say the GT3 is better on track but a couple of guys I know who have raced Porsches disagree and say the GT2 is better, just harder to master.
Is anyone aware of any "meets" that happen in and around the Sussex area as would be great to catch up face to face?

Be aware, there are two types of Corsas, the System Corsa, as supplied on GT3RS which is soft but still road tread and the full Trackday Corsa, which is much grippier, but less good in the wet.
I think Chris Harris went for the Corsa System. It certainly looked to have lots of tread on it.
