Embedded SIM Issue
Discussion
I noticed the WiFi from the embedded SIM on our Macan Turbo PP wasn't working last night....I can live without it 95% of the time and assumed it was a reception problem. I'll see if it's working tonight, although if it isn't it's not critical enough in my case for me to take the time to book it in specially with the OPC.
Not specifically the embedded SIM, but I have repeated problems getting the data package enabled. I spent the first month without the car recognising the data package set up on the store; then a month of it working; now another week where the store just shows the data packaged as "activation in progress". It seems Porsche are struggling with their products now being mobile computing devices as well as bloody good cars! It's more infuriating that the actual LTE / 4G connection for weather, remote access, etc works fine, but I just can't use it as a data connection and hence to get Amazon Music working.
It does seem to be a widespread problem, on the basis that nobody from Porsche Connect ever bothers to reply to my calls or emails, so I assume they've just given up talking to customers about it. It doesn't give me any confidence that they have the first idea how to properly diagnose and solve these distributed mobile problems.
Here's a good example of the weirdness I see: if there is a phone paired to the wifi hotspot, and the 4G modem passes into a low signal area, it will never regain 4G connectivity until the PCM phone is switched off and back on. If there's no device connected to the hotspot, it loses and regains the 4G data connection fine. I've spent 17 years developing exactly these sorts of systems from the hardware level upwards, so I appreciate it's *very difficult*, but this smacks of a product released by people who just don't appreciate that IOT and mobile systems need a very different sort of testing.

No issues with mine for core functionality (maps, send to car, etc), i.e. everything that doesn't need the add on data package.
I only used the add on data package for internet radio, don't really need wifi hotspot/etc. But it worked fine until the free bundle expired the other day. To be honest, given their prices I wouldn't bother using their SIM, far cheaper to pickup a Paygo with data preloaded.
For example you can usually grab a 12GB "3" Paygo SIM for ~£20. We use them a lot for testing. Only issue is (having asked during the masterclass), theres only one 4G modem, so all the Porsche connect data will go through your SIM as well. But you can leave it in the slot and only plug it in when you intend to use it I guess.
I have had a couple of other issue which I shared with the masterclass tech:
Firstly if two bluetooth devices are connected. When one drops off (say person leaves the car) it takes the other one out as well. Sometimes both devices randomly disconnect, indicating a car issue rather then device issue.
Wing mirror dipping for parking is inconsistent. Leaving mirror button on left mirror should mean it dips when you go into reverse. But sometimes you have to toggle L -> R -> L to get the wing mirror to dip.

I just had a call back from Porsche Connect who've identified a "server issue" with my data packages. We'll see! I notice they've extended the free period out to the end of September now, but I will definitely be switching to a PAYG SIM after that if they persist with the crazy pricing.
I have the same problems with the mirror dipping. Too much technology...

Thanks for that, hadn't spotted they'd added another data pack. It looks like its a fresh offering, rather then extension, as you get another 7GB rather then it extending expiry on what was left of the previous pack.I have the same problems with the mirror dipping. Too much technology...
Just added it, not that i'll use it
(Lets see if it shows up in the car for me, or if I also suffer at the hands of the "server"
).The wing mirror issue is annoying, despite the fact I have surround view.
Another annoyance is the lack of flexibility of the two smaller screens. I have maps permanently on the right screen so I can see RTTI info (i.e. if I see a red line, I can avoid that road). But that means I can't see fuel, temp, etc. Instead I'm locked to useless info in the left screen. Particularly the NAV directions which are non sensical. For example the graphic which shows which exit on a roundabout is stupid for want of a better word, it doesn't show you which exit and what one would expect to mean first exit means second for example :/
I told the masterclass tech either get some decent UI/UX and VO consultants in or go back to building dumb cars :/
5to1 - Yes, the left hand screen is useless. I can put a plethora of things on the right hand side, even G forces, but the left screen is doomed to show external temperature forever, unless you've spent a lot on driving assistance options. It would be great if Porsche eventually change some of these things in software, but I suspect they won't. I'm nitpicking though :-)
Hurrah! It seems to be fixed at last. Data connection is back, and the Cayenne is doing a sterling job transporting family and a large roof box of camping stuff down to the south of France at a great rate of knots. I’m not telling the children though; this is a great excuse for two weeks of no YouTube Kids... :-)
