Hardtop for 944 Cabrio? Exists?
Discussion
Came across a mint 944 Cabrio in steel gray yesterday. The car really does have such beautiful lines, that though slightly dated now are still a pleasure to behold.
The only thing stopping me from buying a (Turbo) Cab is the fact I live in merry ol' England where the sky is always threatening rain.
Does anyone know of a hardtop for the cabrio? Any specialist manufacturers?
If one exists, its the cabrio for me!
Also, how big is the boot space on the cabrio? Is there a way to cover the hoodso it doesn't bulge out the back when put down?

No one was offered when the car was new, so if you find one (and I have never seen one) it will be after-market.
The 944 Cab has a great 'hood- very watertight and quiet. It will only leek of its been damaged or the car has had a major shunt and the alaignment is wrong.
Bootspace? Well, its shallower then the Coupe's, and not as tall. But you still have rear seats, to use as luggage space

Hmm, I would say the coupe's boot space is pretty good actually.
Certainly I've been on weekends away with my eldest boy, who is 2, and he requires an unbelievable amount of "stuff".
Also the rear seats fold flat making the coupe load area even bigger. Though I've never had ocasion to do this.
Its not very deep but it is pretty wide and long.
Are you still looking for test drives in London? If you can get over to Kennington, you're welcome to try my coupe.

How kind of you Dan! I am in and out of the country right now, but will certainly take you up on the offer when I get back.
This Pistonheads forum is just gold!
Do you find that you get to put the roof down much? Or is it just summer?
I ride a 650cc bike, and have sworn to keep the roof down, whatever the temperature unless its raining should I buy a cabrio. Superhero? I think so!
The boxster hardtop, couldn't possibly be altered to suit a 944 could it? There's a market there....

I think it would be quite difficult and costly to manufacture a hard top for a 944/968 cab. There isn't one available as far as I know.
That said, the existing cloth hood is very good. I owned a 944 cab and was very pleased with it.
I suppose the lift out roof section of some 968s (maybe 944s as well?) gave the car a targa-esque appeal for those who wanted something between a coupe and a soft top.

I saw a Cab on the road the other day, so pretty!
I really do have to make choice between a Coupe or the Cabrio.. I guess it will come down to what is around at the time. I'll buy the better example.
What about Turbo Cabrio's? Anyone own one? As quick as the Turbo Coupe? Also, whats the correct asking price for one? Dealers prices are so inflated!!
Will keep my eyes peeled for a hardtop!

The problem with Turbo cab is they are very rare- very few come up for sale, so no-one knows what they are worth
(some smart alec is going to say there's a dozen available now!)
The engine was just the same as the later Coupe Turbo unit- ie 250 bhp, easily modified. Mine is a shade under 300 bhp, and 347 lb ft torque. I have not driven a Cab, so I dont know if the handling suffered at all- I guess it must do to a certain extent, but I dont know how much, or if is noticable in everyday driving.
Its a beautiful car, though. I would love a 944 cab after I've done with my 944 Turbo Coupe

Actually jokes aside, there are two on Autotrader. Both under 13,000.
I am looking to get myself a 944 Turbo, whether its a Cabrio is a question of availabiltiy at the time and budget.
Its difficult to gauge what a good price is though.
There are 944 Turbo's with around 90m on the clock for less than 6,000. And Turbos with over a 115,000m for a lot more. Are people really paying these prices?
What should you pay for a mint 944 Turbo?

Hi Speed Deman,
I have owned both the S2 Cab, a 944 Turbo and now a 944 S2 Coupe. The 944 Turbo cab is a little heavier than the coupe, therefore a tad slower (15.9 sec's to 100 rings a bell, coupe being a good second or so faster).
The reason I sold the S2 cab mainly was steering wheel wobble over bumpy roads when pressing on, something you don't encounter with the coupe's. I suppose it depends on where/how you'll be driving, on a smooth surface the cab's handle just great.
944T cab's also are quite rare, and dealer price's aside, they should hold they're prices better than a coupe. Good luck ! Swill

no hard top was ever made,
no company now or in the past has ever made an aftermarket one.
you dont need one anyway.
As long as you follow OEM instructions on cleaning (IN THE DRIVERS MANUAL) then there are no problems, no leakage, generally low lifes dont damage the hoods, there not seen as cars that kids wanna damage
beemers and mercs are well hated so thats why they do them, and new 911's boxters are done out of envy (cost).
s2 cabs no problem

You probably know the coupe does have a large sunroof that lifts out entirely. Though to be honest I've never done this either, maybe I should give it a try.
tried it once on my old 944 - it was very very weird. a bit like that sequence in "man with two brains" when steve martin developed the screw top skull for easy brain surgery. People kept asking why my car had a huge hole in it
