Buying advice for 996
Discussion
Hi All,
I am looking to buy a 996 C4 or C2 (with GT3 aerokit) and would like advice on which to go for.
After reading about all the problems with 996 pre-2002, I dont want to waste £35-40K. Everyone i speak to say i should go for a C2 post 2002 but obviously costs a bit more and I am wary of the wife spinning it out on a roundabout!!!! - what's the general consensus. I am also unsure as to whether I should buy from a Porsche Approved Dealer or independant bearing in mind the 12 months warranty you get with the approved dealer?
Any advice is greatly welcomed
Cheers

The reported issues of pre-2002 C4 and C2 are not widespread. I read these and still went ahead with my recent purchase with my eyes
'wide-open'.
IMO: if you're wary and if you can afford it, go to an OPC. You get a warranty for a min of 12 months. Check the service intervals, bodywork history, previous ownership details, details of work carried out on the car etc.
If anything doesn't feel right, do what anyone would do with any Marque....walk away.
Yep, I know you're paying alot of money so it makes sense to look as many as you can. You'll find the right one for the price thats right for you. And you might just find the C2 with GT3 Aerokit
Good luck!

A newer car (assuming it's UK spec) would always hold its value more than an older car.
Wherever you buy your car from, take it to an OPC and buy the extended warranty - @£ 870 well worth it.
I’ve had more than my moneys worth back. And yes, Porsche will sell you it, even if you didn’t buy from a OPC.
Good luck

Hi, I got my C2 coupe last year, and went through a fair bit of research on all the issues then.
Even though 996 prices are falling, I still don't see many 2002 C2/C4 for less than £40k at a dealer.
You may have to up your budget / go older.
I saw a C2 with GT3 kit at Cridfords not that long ago I think. Autobahn too. Northway seem only to do 996s with the aerokit.
Have a word with some of the independents about the RMS issues, I think they have a better prespective on it than the Net doom and gloom. One theory is that if you get past 25,000 miles with no sign of RMS, than you will probably be ok
I am glad I got the car and enjoy driving it every day rather than counting the depreciation I have saved by not getting it yet.
Good luck with the search.
